OM617 Diesel Porn

You guys with the newer MB`s after 85 won`t appreciate this engine.

This thing is beautiful, what they looked like when new.

Yeah I was off longer that I thought. Last posting was 2014, that is when we moved from Ca. to Nv.

Bought an 86 F250 6.9 Diesel 4-spd for the move over, and an old POS Car
Trailer.

Then it was a new learning curve to learn these IHC Diesels. Signed up on
A Ford Diesel Forum, then a second one.

Then ended up sort of rebuilding the truck from one end to the other from
neglect and abuse etc... Damn engine just keeps on going.
192K when we bought it and now up to 309K. Paid $1800 for it.

Then bought a second one a 85 same running gear for $2500, 165K.

Then 5 Mercedes W123 followed me home since being here. Up to 9 now...
Iam in the cheap wagon Club now I guess, cost $400 for an 85.

The latest one is an 83 300D.
https://www.copart.com/lot/59756110/salvage-1983-mercedes-benz-300-dt-nv-reno

Yeah Iam well, still kickin, 77 now, where did that come from.
Still pulling parts from PNP. Pulled the front suspension out of an 82 240D
last Thursday for the above car.
And 2 doors off a 94 Ford for the rusty beat up doors on the 86 F250.

Thanks for the update! You are an inspiration to us young (72) guys who still hobby car a bit. I remembered you moving to the mountains (right?) but would not have guessed it has been so long since you posted here.

I am glad you are having good luck with the ford diesels. I had one of them 20 years ago which developed a cracked block. I talked to an Engineer at the international engine factory in Indy and found though the ford block is 100% interchangeable with the international it cracked and the IH did not. The cracks started down in the main bearing web and worked its way up the cylinder wall until it started seeping coolant into the oil.

I love engineers. They always tell the truth.

Iam not in the mountains, but the mountains east go up to 9600ft and west is the back side of the Sierra Nevada MT range between us and Commiefornia.
We can see the lights of Lake Tahoe at night.

We are at 5260ft elevation out in the Sage Brush, Rabbit brush etc...
out in the boonies. Jan 27 got 10" of snow, next morning 11" and that night 1" freezing rain etc...
Driveway is 245ft from the road and a circle driveway. So now Iam the proud owner of a
30" 11hp Snow Blower. probably never snow rest of the winter.
Old timers said most they have seen at one time out here in 30yrs.

4.25 acres, 2 shops, 40 x 50 and 30 x 18. and they ain`t big enough.
Started in June digging up the cable from the house to the LIL shop, about 120ft. Original owner had it buried about 18".

Dug the ditch 3ft deep, new conduit and 3 2ga copper.
removing the over head power from pole to house (125ft), and running it from pole to lil shop. 25ft. under ground. and up grading from 100amp to 400amp braker box and meter will be on the shop wall.
removing the meter at the house braker box.

Put a new sub panel inside the LIL shop.
If you saw the mickey mouse wiring that is here, you would run.

Waiting for the power co. to replace the pole, and transformer. Pole was put installed in 74.
Lucky me, I get to buy the transformer.

My simple little job, has gone up to $12K.
Be able to open up an RV park with all this power....LOL

People ask what ya going to do when you retire? You are going to get bored. Too much to do to get bored.

Tomorrow going back to PNP and pull 2 fenders off that Ford and some other poking around.

This all sounds good to me Charlie ! .

I wish I had your knowledge and skills, I have mostly 1923 knob & tube wiring in my house...

The shop sounds great ! 400amperes, I ass-U-me you're a welder too ? .

FWIW, I'm crippled now so my P.T. is often taken in the local junkyards, I walk and walk and walk...

Sometimes I get things, others not, exercise is always a good thing .

Mind the sun ! .

Nate, been retired since 06. Walked in the office and told my Boss HE
was fired. Damn that felt good.
Been there so long they thought I would never leave, then when I decided
to leave, they didn`t want me to go. Funny how that works.

And the place has survived the past 14 years w/o me. Imagine that.

I wish I had my Knowledge and skills too, forgot more than I know, wish
I paid more attention along the way. There is more than we know, then

when you finally do know something, no one wants to listen to you.

Iam not a welder, but can lay down so pretty good Bubble Gum. LOL
Put enough on the project it should stick together...Right.
I do have an older Lincoln I bought for $600, looks kind of like this one...
but older.

I want a 50amp for a welder in ea shop and wired for maybe 30 amp for
a compressor. And then maybe add a lift.

I have a friend that is the county building inspector, had him come over,

and he walked me through the project, and gave me 4 electrical cont. he
knew. Couldn`t get with them, too busy.
There building a new tire shop in town and saw a contractor there, and talked to them.
Guy came over in a couple days, and this is where the 400amp started.
Run the power from the pole underground to the shop, eliminate the
over head power to the house, slap a 400amp on the wall with the meter.
Run power to house underground (in the ditch I already dug) and eliminate the meter on the house. It was a dead end, they wouldn`t call
back etc....

I go to the county to get a permit, but Iam not the contractor.
NV Energy is working down the road, talk to one of the guys, he is the Inspector. Ya got to go through us first before anything can happen.
Go to Carson City office and get the paper work started. Give them a rough
design, and a $1K to get it rolling.
Go back to the county, and now I can get a Permit. Iam the contractor now Funny how this all works.

PNP

I went to PNP yesterday to pull the fender off that 94 Ford PU for a buddy
of mine. I get about 1/3 the way up the hill, and the next 2/3rds of the yard, all the cars are sitting on the ground. They took all the Wheel Stands
out from under the cars, and put them on the ground.
Well that`s special. Now how in the heck ya going to pull anything?

I was there last Thursday 2/25 and they were all up.
Talked to a worker, and seems like maybe a car fell on a customer in one
of the yards some where. So knee jerk reaction, put all cars, all yards on the ground. We`ll see where this goes.

And the 240D I got the Suspension from, is gone. wanted to pull the Head.

OH Well.

Yeah Nate, you can definately get your exercise walking through the yard.
Ours is up hill, and I must bring every tool I own...LOL as heavy as my
Wheelbarrow is. If I leave any tool in the PU, some low life will break in.
Had that happen in the Moss Landing yard.
Iam dead tired when I get home, but had a great time. It`s my therapy
session.

Talking about Tube and Know. The house we rented in Santa Cruz, had
that type of wiring. Must have been built in 1930. Moved in temporary.

and were there for 27yrs.. us and the termites.

Post Life, Welding, Visting, Termites......

Visitors are always welcome, my '82 240D's AC works well now thanx to Rich's SANDEN upgrade .

I worked in a junkyard and foolishly never learned how to operate the torch, not even to cut things up .

I never planned to retire but SWMBO told me I had to before I was stuck in a wheelchair and we couldn't travel (I courted her traveling in my 1959 Metropolitan Nash DHC), I'm 5 years retired and we're still not traveling yet dammit .

I too have begun to forget things I wish I could recall as I'm always being asked how to fix or adjust some old vehicular issue / problem .

I'm waiting for my big brother to come by, it looks like I've found a junker with good exterior door handles for his 1979 Dodge D200 crewcab ~ I recently fixed one of the door latches that failed and the exterior handle's return spring failed and the chrome is badly pitted....

I imagine driving a Studebaker across America would be a long trip if the seats aren't good, I'd love it having rattled my way across America many times, often in a slow pokey 240D....

If the termites in my 1923 'Craftsman Bungalow' ever stop holding hands, it'll collapse on me .

The seat is pretty good for a Coupe Express but the seating position is a little too bent over for a cross country jaunt.
