IP Timing - Drip tube pours fuel instead of drips?
 

Hey alls...


Installing my salvage yard pump. Got it all mostly buttoned up and attempting to time the pump. With the delivery valve and spring removed.. holder back in place and tube installed, it POURS fuel with every push of the primer.


I put the delivery valve and spring back in and it doesn't drip our pour. Spun the engine over by hand 2 rotations and lined it back up at 24 degrees. Pulled the spring and delivery valve again and installed the drip tube. Same problem.


It doesn't matter which direction I rotate the pump, it still just pours fuel. Now after the initial pouring of fuel subsides, it drips constantly with no pressure from the primer pump. Push the primer once and it sprays fuel.


What am I doing wrong??

Sounds like you may have installed the pump a tooth or two off.
If so, your timing may be so advanced or retarded that the available range of adjustment won’t make a difference.

I didn't think that was possible. The engine was setup on 24 degrees when I pulled the old pump. Timing marks on the replacement pump were lined up (wide tooth opening lined up with timing mark). Lined the pump up.. wiggled it a bit and it slid right into place.


I'll try and turn the engine over a bit by hand and see if I can get it to start dripping instead of pouring instead of moving the pump. At least I'll see where it's at that way.

There were some 617 pumps that were mismarked. (If you happen to be dealing with a 617.)

Got it! It was several teeth off. Got it lined back up and it fired up no problem.

Got you. From your initial description, it sounded like it squirted out fuel as you pushed the primer always, no matter what crank angle it was at (actually camshaft angle). You are searching for the point where the fuel inlet to #1 IP cylinder just shuts off, so that pushing the primer doesn't give any fuel out. They spec that as 1 drip/sec for the "just before" point.
