Turnsignal stalk flasher or flasher switch
85SD turn signals not working. No response at the turn signal lights with the car running. I do get a solid light when the emergency flasher is on.
Other posts say that the common failures are the turn signal stalk, flasher or the flasher switch. Is there an easy way to narrow it down without removing parts? |
Don't know if the 85SD is wired up the same but when I though my Flasher Unit was dead it turned replacing the Emergency Flasher switch fixed it.
My Wife thumps her purse down on the Center Counsel and I think she damaged the switch. It would be nice if someone local had another Emergency Flasher Switch to swap with just to see if that is the issue. The same with the Flasher Relay. |
I’m may be mis-remembering but I’m pretty sure the same thing is true in a W116 so I’d look at the hazard switch first. On my 450SEL, cycling the hazard switch many times temporarily fixed the turn signals. I either replaced it or spritzed it with deoxit to permanently fix it.

I have an extra hazard switch. I'll start there. Was hoping symptoms would point 1 way or the other. I think the flasher was replaced but probably with a used unit.

I replaced the flasher switch with a used part. The flashers work but the turn signals still do not light. Is the turn signal stalk the next item on the list?
Also, moving the stalk turn signal switch up and down as if to turn the signals on will intermittently start the buzz which I think is the seat belt and light warning. I don't know whether both systems use the same alarm but it goes off after a few seconds but will come back on if the turn signal is moved. |
My w123 did that. It turned out to be the hazard switch was failing.
