240D manual transmission compatability
I have a US spec '81 240D with a 4-speed manual transmission that needs to be replaced.
I've had trouble finding one locally so I've turned to ebay. I found one from a german market '83 240D and I want to make sure it will fit before I have it shipped here. I've had issues in the past with transmission compatibility between US and Euro spec. Specifically my german market '84 300D having a different automatic transmission than the US market 300Ds. Which made sourcing a replacement near impossible. (I ended up having to contact Sun Valley Transmission to build one for me) Any thoughts, ideas, knowledge of such things, would be greatly appreciated! :) |
Try car-part, they show several in cali.

I have a euro spec 240 and the only transmission difference I have run into is the spline count on the input shaft. I had to order my clutch disc from the classic center because all the clutches sold here had half the spline notches on the disc. I read that I could have ordered a 190d clutch disc, but I didn't want to delay getting the correct one longer than I had to.

There are three 4-speed transmissions used in the 240D models. You can look at the back of the engine and see which it has.
Square iron body. Slope back iron body. Getrag aluminum body. The shift rods and slave cylinder+tube are NOT interchangeable. |
