OM617 Oil bypass valve removal

Hello all. I want to hot-tank the oil filter housing on the OM617 that I'm rebuilding and I can't get the bypass valve out. It has a plastic piece in there that I don't want to "cook" in the hot tank. It is in the smaller of the 2 holes with what looks like a big flathead screwdriver notch in the top. Has anyone removed this? Any tips on getting it out? I'm hoping it doesn't require a special tool.

Thanks!
Alex

I know you want to hot tank it but it isn't too difficult of a part to clean by hand. I have no idea about removing that valve but just a thought if you can't figure it out.

If the "hot tank" that you have in mind is that which is used for iron parts, refrain. The solution in the tank is caustic, and will dissolve aluminum.

I figured it out and got the bypass valve out. I had to make my own tool out of a 3/4" impact socket. At first, I tried cutting down an old beat up spark plug socket but the material wasn't strong enough so the ears bent when I tried to turn out the valve. The impact socket is much thicker and stronger and worked very well.

The measurements are as follows:
Ear width- 4.2 mm
Ear height- 4.4 mm
Overall socket length- 82.4 mm
Socket outside diameter- 28.2 mm

Hopefully this will help someone in the future.

Alex
