Mitsubishi 4D55

Does anyone know how here if the Mitsubishi 4D55 is a reliable engine I know for a fact Mitsubishi gas engines from The 80’s are not reliable and I found a brand new 4D55 engine for sale for $6500.00 and I think is the same engine from the 80’s

I have a 4D56T in my van. Not sure what you are looking for here, but happy to talk about this one. I do not know about the 55, other than I assume its an iteration earlier than mine.

What year is your van ? I just want to find out if investing in a Mitsubishi diesel is a good investment. I invested around $2,000 in a Mercedes-Benz 603 rebuilding the engine about 6 years ago and now it has 110,000 on the rebuilt engine and still is running good. I just wonder if the Mitsubishi engine will be as good

Mine is a 1993. The 4d56 is known for overheating easily, which is exascerbated in a COE van since there isnt a clear radiator flow. Many folks in the community (me included) install gauges and watch our EGTs/water temps like a hawk. It works in the Delica, but if I had a totally blank slate, there are a ton of engines id choose over the 4d56. Lots of gas engines (LS, Ecotec turbos etc), and for diesel I would be looking at 1.9 TDI engines, MB and cummins units as well.

For 6500 I would pass hard. Get a OM617 in good shape for a fraction of that. Or, if you are dead set on a mitsu engine, look at a hyundai DB4H which is literally a new-production recast of thr 4d56T. You can find and import those for around the same price. A non turbo 4d55 is a slug and aside from specific applications (i.e. replacing an old 4d55) I cant see a logical reason to buy one, and especially not for that much.

Also forgot to mention, the 4Ds were not sent in any vehicles stateside so parts require time and patience to find and ship.

Thank you tbomachines for the information. I have a 93 Mitsubishi Mightymax with a bad gas engine and I want to convert to diesel and swapping a Mitsubishi diesel is easier I don’t have to fabricate the motor and transmission mounts but now with the information You gave me I’m going to go for a OM601 with a 5 speed

Quite welcome! Ive had a number of mitsus for some reason and know them well. If I were in your position I would probably just rebuild the gas engine (g64b?) or swap with a good 4g63, or 6g72/3 v6. That year I believe the direct diesel swap would have been the same 4d56t that I have. Im selling the Delica for 10.5k if you want a whole van with the engine! It does fit a 4x8 sheet of drywall with the back closed....

I found a donor for my pickup it’s an 85 190D 5 speed for $550. the 601 is rated at 72 hp not too far from the Mitsubishi turbo diesel from the 80’s rated at 80 hp it’s the only engine that fits without having to do a lot of modifications the 617 it’s too long and heavy and finding a 5 speed for it is hard an buying an adapter is expensive and the 601 shares a lot of parts with my other engines 602 and 603

I don't think so. I had two Mighty-Max pickups with the 4D55 (2.3 Turbo), One a 1983,the other a 1985. I still have the engine from the '83 (actually a Dodge D50). Check out my thread "Rebuilt Diesel engines" on this forum. I currently have enough parts to rebuild another 4D55, minus the head. New heads are available for around $400. The only difference between a 4D55 (2.3L) and a 4D56 (2.5L) is the stroke. The rods and crank are different. Many of the 4D56's were also intercooled. Both engines share the same block and head, as well as other parts and accessories. These engines were made up into the late 90's for other countries, but only in Mitsubishi and Dodge trucks from 1983-1985 for the US market.

Youre right on this - stand corrected there, my own ignorance. Sorry OP! 6500 for an engine is still ridiculous.
