misfire, smoke and roughness w/ extended idle time: OM606 NA
Background: 194k mikes. 6 Beru new glow plugs, harness and controller. Rebuilt injectors by Mark Blevins (DieselFuelInjector.guru).
When first starting the car, it fires right up and runs smoothly. After a few minutes of idling when cold, it will start to run roughly, misses, and loads up with blue smoke. The longer it runs in this condition, the rougher it runs and more it smokes. The missing and running poorly does get worse with colder temperatures. In order to "clean out" the car, drivining it normally with heavy acceleration cleans it up. After coming to operating temp, there are no issues even with a large time just at idle. Any idea what could be causing this? I am inclined to wonder if it is a timing or valve related issue. Otherwise the car runs strong and doesn't smoke.

I have pretty much the same thing going on with my '96. A couple local guys who know more than me suggest checking injection timing. I suppose delayed timing from chain stretch is possible. My car has 215,000 miles on the clock.

That's exactly what I was wondering. I plan to change the headgasket (slow external coolant leak at cyl 6 pass side) and was planning to change the timing chain and tensioner at the same time.

If you check injection timing before you take the head off it would be good to know what you find. I'd also be curious to know if advancing timing improves this cold start issue before you replace the chain.

Sure sounds like a failing head Gasket. May wish to look for tiny air bubbles in the coolant or a pressured cooling system with a cold engine.

Sounds to me like your glow plug relay, which has after-glow, is not staying on the after-glow long enough anymore. Capacitor in the timing circuit has probably aged out. May also be faulty temperature signal to the relay, telling the relay that the engine is hot when the engine is cold.

Thx guys, I will change the headgasket and keep my fingers crossed.

I know this is an old thread, but I have the same symptoms with my 97 E300. Any resolution to share? Thanks!
