1982 300sd pulleys touching

Hello, could anyone tell me why on earth my water pump pulley in touching my crank pulley? They seem to overlap about an 1/8th and it’s hard to see why. The metal grinds when the car runs so it’s not good. Thanks 🙏🏻

Probably wornout harmonic balancer, or loose bolt/cupwashers on crankshaft snout. BTDT.

Resist the temptation to run the engine until after this is fixed.
Could get very costly, if the crankshaft snout gets damaged, when the harmonic balacer fails.
I got lucky and only had to replace the harmonic balancer and the water pump.

It's pretty tough for a balancing disc to "wear out." Maybe you are thinking about the vibration damper.
