Took the End Play On My Timer/Intermediate Shaft

Too much end play on the Timer/Intermediate shaft is said to be one of the causes of Vacuum Pump Failure.

This is over the max spec. I bought a new bearing last year anticipating this could happen.

I did this with the Timing Chain installed as it normally is on the engine.

Blow is from my Notes:
Timer End Play
I went back and took a closer look at both the CD and book Service Manuals and found it listed as: End play of intermediate sprocket shaft: 0.05-0.12mm.
In section 07.1-240 of the Service Manual.
I assume this measurement is take with the Timer installed on the Shaft and with no Timing Chain on it to interfere with the measurement.
Repeat broke new vacuum pump
second vacuum pump, help! on a trip-Toronto - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

I'm curious to see if you can change the bronze bushing without removing the intermediate shaft and/or throwing injection timing off. Looks like you can, with the timing device out of the way, and then using marks to re-align the timing device to the chain. Please let us know how you do it.

I believe you can do that. However, I am wondering about the other bearings. There is 2 others one on the Timer and one on the Fuel Injection pump end of the Intermediate Shaft.

I am probably going to pull the Injection pump to take a look at that rear bearing.

However, I have no idea about the availability of the other 2 bearings. Also the CD Manual does not have bearing clearances. I have one but have not looked yet I am wondering if the technical manual has the actual clearances/wear limits.

Note the CD Manual has that the rear intermediate shaft bushing is supposed to be dipped on liquid nitrogen and then installed. That won't be happening I I change it.

I am doing extra stuff like changing the timing chain main rail and that Intermediate Shaft Front Bushing along with removing the Cylinder head.

I am getting bogged down by little things. The upper impinging chain guide has a pin that needs to be pulled out of the cylinder head. My initial attempts today failed. Will try again tomorrow.
