how does seat cover separate from padding 86-91 126 car

I'm getting ready to sell my 84SD and want to include leather front seat covers from an 86-91 seat with the car. (I searched on the seat PN stamped on the padding but don't have it with me now.) I separated the springs and back. The seat cover came off easily but is attached to the pad. I need the pad and other parts for refurbishing the 85 so have to separate cover and pad.

It looks like the seat is held to the pad with two thin metal rods that run through cloth tunnels sewn into the cover and attached with single use staples/clips. The rods don't apparently slide out and I don't want to tear the cloth.

Has anyone dealt with this?

Not certain on the w126, but on the early w124, those wire rods where also hog ringed to the pad. The rings will be buried deep on the underside, it is best to work your fingers along the sewn rod end and find the staple/hog ring points. They could also be Stitched with thick thread or twine if the covers where previously replaced.

I see some sort of wire connector but am wondering how to replace them. They are not standard hog ring and I'm hoping to be able to install new covers without subbing the work out because the local upholsters I've dealt with are mostly incompetent.

I'll cut the wires to remove the cover unless someone posts otherwise. The ultimate objective is for the seats to feel and look new.

If they are similar to the ones I dealt with they are unique squareish hog rings, and not easy to work without a specialized tool. All of the rings loop over the wire rods on the covers and should go thru the pad and attach to the sping assembly below. This affixes the pad to the base to keep it put.

The wire rods will slip out of the ends of the old covers and transfer to the new covers. The square hog rings are simply crimped together to form the square and can be prised apart with needle nose pliers.

When I attached my new covers I could only get 4 rings back in place. You wil have to straighten the bottom legs like an upside down U, loop over the wire rod, and then guide the ring legs thru their old holes in the pad, push down, over the underside spring loop, and then bend the legs if the U to close the square and complete the attachment. You may be able to do all of them with a second helper, otherwise solo, I could only manage the corners. For all of the other spots, I used a canvas needle and twine and mimicked the same connections using the old hogring holes in the pad and loop tied to tge spring base. This worked out very well, easy to do solo and has held up well after 7 months of use.

You could also have a style of cover that employs plastic clips. Usually these are for the seat back. In this style, the square loops are permanently attached to the wire rod loop attachment and simply push thru a slot in the seat foam. Once thru on the back side you insert a plastic tang into the loop forming a T lock. Inspect the undderside or backside of your seat foam and look for these plastic cross tangs, sime are straight and others can be a plastic saw tooth style to grab elastic cloth loops.

The forum has good info with pics on seat cover swaps.

Hopefully this helps

I got the covers off. I may buy new pads since I want the seats to be as new and to last 20 years. If they break at 20, someone else can fix them.
