Will OM602 start with 3 glow plugs in New England winter?

Two of the glow plugs on the 91 have been in there about 55k miles...the other three are more recent. One of the old plugs is bad, the other still works. I will replace both at the same time when I take it in....but I want to wait till it needs other work done. Everything else in perfect shape right now!

If that other plug goes out, think I could make through a New England winter on three plugs?

For what it's worth, I'm confident compression is good.

GPs on a 602 is a pretty easy DIY with basic tools.

I don't have experience with OM602. What I can tell you is that Om603 will not start with 3 GP in SoCal weather. It happened to my 300SDL. However no one can tell for sure what might happen. I would always try to have all working GP if it were my car.

Btw, GP don't go out one by one. One or more can go out at the same time or very close.

The NA 602 2.5 that I had started pretty easy one plug down, IDK about 2. I used it in a real cold winter for us, -15 or -20F.

I forget if that was an intake off job or not, to do the glow plugs. Worst part of intake off work on the 602 is remembering where all the vacuum hoses go and getting them there.

Cold starting also depends on the condition of your injectors and the cranking speed as well as compression

Got a block heater that will keep everything toasty?
A massive cold crank top notch battery?
Do you feel lucky?

One afternoons work? Not sure why you're waiting.

My naturally aspirated OM602 wouldn't start with a couple of bad glow plugs. I replaced them all.

Based on what I've seen a 617 do in a Nevada winter with two GPs out, I wouldn't want to find out the hard way in a New England winter. 617 glow plugs are stupid easy. Not sure about a 602.

IDI diesels need GP's to start, especially in winter and especially in a New England winter (I would guess).

The equivalent would be Northern Iowa or MN I would think. That car would not start in Iowa in February...TBH, even southern Iowa.

My OM617 5 cyl will start on 2 glow plugs on a 50F morning, but takes some encouragement and it starts out very rough. I recall that 3 working glow plugs is the minimum for the dash lamp to light, so that might be M-B recommendation. I did verify that it won't start on no glow plugs, even with much cranking on a 75 F day, as I once had the GP relay box out for crash repairs and just wanted to move the car. I had to jumper 12 V to 3 glow plugs to get it to fire.
