Tuned 722.6 TCU: First Impressions

Finally got around to getting a tuned TCU for one of the CDI's. Easy to swap out...lives under the carpet in passenger footwell.

In addition to Comfort (C) and Sport (S), I now have Agility/Sport+ (A) and Manual (M) modes. By pressing the C/S button you toggle through the four modes. In manual, you shift gears by bumping shifter to left or right. When there is a need to downshift, that happens automatically, which is a nice feature.

So far I'm pretty impressed. Everything just seems smoother and tighter...no slop. Trying to decide whether to drive in A or S most of the time. $300 well spent.

FWIW the description from the tuner: "TCU tune really brings out ECU tune. Car feels like it's pulling faster due to modified lockup clutch engagement. Also torque limiters are modified, engine doesn't drop boost between shifts, so it just keeps pulling; shifts are quicker."

I'll live with this one for a few months then probably get another for the other CDI.

So, if anyone's looking to buy a new toy with any of that leftover stimulus money, this is it! :)

Are these custom tunes or options available if you know your way around SDS?

My impression is that they're custom....but perhaps doable with SDS...or Vediamo.

Who did you source it from?

Guy named Marcin Hoski...who was doing tunes for Alex at LegitStreetCars (heard about him from watching some of Alex's videos.)

I will add that another reason I was emboldened to do this is that the guys at Sun Valley seemed to think that tuning the 722.6 TCU is a good idea.

If you have a K-tag (or clone) you can read and write the eeprom and flash in an EGS52 module relatively easy. One wire soldered to the board then a few connections at the pins gets it done. The best thing about the K-tag is that it will automatically correct the checksum when writing back to the module. I've spent some time futzing around with the TCU in my 06 Sprinter van trying to suss out which maps do what, with moderate success. With my busy season over I'm likely to get back to it soon.

I don't have any major complaints about my 722.6's.....its slow but trusty in my Sprinter and adequate in the wagon.....

I wish there was a tune for the 722.9 that combined the quicker firmer shifts of the Sport Mode on my GLK with the lower RPM shifts of Eco mode....that'd be perfect.

Here's a fun video of Alex and Marcin with the mods they did to a CDI.
