722.6 transmission broke

My transmission had been slipping when shifting for a while. I finally lost 1st gear so it's due for a complete rebuild. I've had bad luck with a couple of local transmission shops in the Phoenix area. So I was wondering if anyone can point me to a reliable shop/supplier. My car has the OM606 turbo diesel.

I'd be interested in buying a good used transmission as well.

I have not. Do you have experience with them?

If I needed a rebuilt tranny I would insist that my mechanic get it from Sun Valley. Their reputation is stellar.

Thanks, I'll check with German Transmission in Phoenix to see if they would be willing to get it done with a transmission from Sun Valley.

What would the total cost be with installation from a shop?

What would the total cost be? I'm thinking it was $2,000 for a rebuild and probably another $800 for installation from a shop. You can get a trans rebuild from Aamco for probably $3,200 and if I'm not mistaken it's a lifetime warranty on it.

Don Andres,

Is that in the white on black interior w126 606 swapped car? IIRC that had a 722.3 when it was first built. If it is a 722.6, there should be either an OF gear or PCS standalone controller running the transmission which will likely need some software adjustment to get the shifts dialed back in after the rebuild and to prevent premature wear. 722.3 will not require any software adjustment as it is all mechanically controlled. If it is a 722.6 there are many versions out there, I'd assume it'd be out of an I6 car. In that case I'd get a good used one from a V8 or V8 AMG car and swap the I6 bellhousing over for more durability as they have a much higher torque rating.

Here is some cross reference information:

Edit: I saw the engine bay picture in the photo thread after I wrote this, the dipstick is 722.3 style. I'd guess that it still has the SDL 722.3. This is good news as that should be much easier for a good shop to setup properly and you won't have to fiddle with tuning a controller.

Are all forward gears not working? And, is revers working?

I believe it's about that much for a 722.3, about $1k more for a 722.6.

Finding any tranny shop qualified and willing to work on any german car is a real challenge nowadays. The ones I've spoken with tell me that the "tools needed to work on german cars are so expensive they don't want to get involved".

Thank you, the car does have a 722.6 with the OF controller. The picture I posted was taken before the conversion to 722.6. I'm looking at both options - getting a rebuilt transmission or a good used one from an AMG car. I hope to know more this week.

Yes, you're right - especially on the later models. I got rid of my newer Mercedes vehicles. I'd rather spend money on maintaining and repairing an older Mercedes - few sensors and electronics to deal with.

Going to a dealership and pay hundreds for diagnostics and then thousands for some electronics board or air struts or whatever gimmicky part gave up is not acceptable to me.

When the transmission blew up at 80K in my '08 ML55 they estimated $10,000.-- on the low side at the dealership. I had it done by a local shop for $4,500.--. Next the front air struts broke - $3,000.--

I can do a lot of repairs and maintenance on my '87 for that kind of money. Whatever the cost will be to fix the transmission issue - it will be a lot less than what my newer Mercedes cost. And I get to drive a classic car that I like better than today's over-designed vehicles.

Reverse is working but I couldn't get the transmission to shift up into higher gears.
