Priming the oil system

I have been rebuilding engines lately http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/411487-rebuilt-diesel-engines.html
and I needed a way to prime the oil system before starting the engine. I bought a one gallon garden sprayer, and attached a banjo fitting on the end of the sprayer wand. By replacing the injection pump oil feed hose with the hose from the pump sprayer, the entire oil system can be filled with fresh oil. With all the oil galleries filled with oil, I don't have to rely on the assembly lube to protect the engine during first start up.

Yes, I also use one for filling the 722.9 transmissions found in 2007 and later cars (no dipstick, they fill from below).

I did that on several gas engines, going into the port for the oil pressure gage. Added 1 qt so no worries of starting dry.

You could fill the differential if you can only loosen the drain plug. Beats flipping the car over.

Yes, but one would need a different sprayer for each fluid. I have one for trans fluid, and this other one for engine oil. If I were to use one for gear oil, I would need to get yet another one only used for gear oil.

One of the places I worked on assembly we pre-lubed the bearings with 50/50 Walmarts version of STP and Motor Oil. It does not run off. You could also use straight STP. And since they time they have assembly lube you can buy.

Cylinders just got Motor Oil. If there was a over head cam the when the Motor Oil was put in it was dumped over the shaft.

Depending on how the Oil Filter is mounted you could fill the Oil Filter with Motor Oil.

The Spark Plugs, Glow Plugs or diesel Injectors were not installed and the Engine was cranked to bring up the oil pressure.
And that was a Normal for any rebuild and also what I do on mine.

At the Naval Ship yard you hot oil flush the system (an electric pump is used) and pulled the filter out to be analyzed installed an new filter and periodically rotated the engine during the flushing procedure. You did that till the Lab told you to stop. Drained the Oil and put in fresh Oil.
And there is a amazing amount of crud that comes out even though the Oil passages and so on were cleaned.
The also have a run in period where you take Oil samples periodically and send them to the Lab. After that I don't know if during the Engine break in the Ship continues with the Oil Samples and Lab but but I bet they do.

The time when pre-pressurizing the oil system is actually needed most is when the engine is hot and has sat enough time for the hot oil to drain out of the bearings and it sat long enough for the Oil to drain out of the Oil Filter housing (I am thinking 617 engines).
