OM602 Turbo Rebuild.

Hello, I am a brand-new diesel Mercedes owner, I bought a 1993 W124 300D with 263,000 miles which had a knock. The owner didn't know what it was and just wanted to get rid of it. It's a nice southern car with little rust.

I posted on BenzWorld.org trying to diagnose it and eventually found out that the #3 conrod bearing destroyed itself. Probably due to running it with low oil in the past.

Now I'm looking for a list of what I will need to successfully rebuild this engine to working order. Parts, specs, etc. I know I will need new bearings (con-rod and main), lots of new gaskets, and if the crankshaft is damaged I'll need to get that grinded and polished. My budget is around $1,000 to $1,500.

I'm having trouble finding specifics though, it seems like no one else has posted about how to do this. I know it's a 28-year-old car, but it seems like there should be more info. Do European websites have more info?

I tried uploading pictures but it didn't work.

Question: how do you find out the #3 rod bearing is shot? You dropped the oil pan or engine out already?

This is my opinion, my opinion alone. It is cheaper to find a replacement engine, om602/3 if you have not done overhauling engine before. You could be spending all the money and hassle and do not do it right. Removing the crank is a lot of work if you find the crank journal is oval'ed. Good luck.

Yes, i did take out the oil pan.

I cannot find a 602 or 603 for under $1,500. And that's the non-turbos. I would have to save for one.

I have done mini overhaul before with OM603 and OM601. The result was good if the crank is not damaged. You can try your luck if you are certain the crank is not oval'ed. I took the head off. Pushed the piston from below and checked the piston rings and replaced. Replaced the rod bearings, replaced the main bearings ( it is possible to slide the main bearing out from below. ). Honed the cylinders then put everything back together. The engine ran for 20K miles but the rod knock came back because the crank was bad. If you have taken engine apart then you can attempt to overhaul it. The problem is the crank, it is likely the crank is damaged with low oil level. Good luck. It is a better bet if you can find a replacement. Good luck.
