You said you don't have collision coverage, but do you have comp (comprehensive)? Wouldn't that be your coverage here since the car wasn't being driven at the time, similar to a tree falling on it? At least then maybe your insurance would help out here.

Unhappy Another W116 Gone

Yes, these are not as plentiful as they were just ten years ago .

Once I was given one, a real cherry but I don't like big cars so I took the radio and one spare tire and let the police tow it away .

At that time I had zero comprehension of their value to those who love them, so many near perfect ones were being scrapped and this one came to me sans key and paperworks due to some air headed girl .

Oops .

I still see them now and then in the scrap yards but mostly rusty and beat to death .

This was a pretty nice specimen, I saw it in the flesh.

A guy over on the BMW forum had his custom E30 totaled by some idiot. He had dropped an M30 into it, “shoehorned” might be a better verb. It was one of the more recent 3.4 L versions of the motor, definitely bigger than the M20 that was stock.

I drove two BMW 535i models, the E34 with that motor. Fast cars.

Update on ‘Stormcloud’

Turns out the hit and run driver was actually uninsured at the time of the collision.
The insurance repair estimate was over $5K, on 03/10/2022 they paid out the $3.5K maximum under my policy’s uninsured motorist coverage.
To avoid racking up commute miles on my wife’s car, on 02/19/2022 I bought my neighbor’s 1991 300SE
(black with gray leather interior) to use as a daily driver until I can get ‘Desert Rose’ back in service.

Instead of fixing ‘Stormcloud’ I decided to harvest any usable parts, and to swap the motor and transmission into ‘Desert Rose’.
I was able to secure space in a well equipped DIY garage for this project, courtesy of a PP forum member.
The 15” bundts , rear subframe and control arms were removed from ‘Stormcloud’, and swapped into ‘Desert Rose'.
Then the motor and transmission were removed from ‘Stormcloud’.

On 04/01/2022, (no kidding), the title, registration and vanity plates were turned over to the DMV and ‘Stormcloud’ was officially reclassified as “JUNKED”.
Next, I saved as many usable parts as possible, front bumper, doors, interior trim, front seats, both windscreens, exterior trim,
dash, instrument cluster, brake calipers, brake rotors, rear shocks, locks, and etc.

On the rainy morning of 04/11/2022 the stripped chassis of ‘Stormcloud’ was flatbed towed to the Richmond scrap metal yard of Sims Metal.
The body is gone, but the heart of ‘Stormcloud’ will live on in ‘Desert Rose’.
Awaiting parts to replace a leaking front crank seal after the engine from ‘Stormcloud’ is mounted to an engine stand.

Makes me sick to my stomach, but at least you salvaged what you could and made do with what was left. Good on you for not throwing in the towel.

Sorry. I hate it when broke assed people drive without insurance but note that broke assed people have to get to their crappy low paying jobs. Too bad that they never learned any marketable skills. Of course, I consider those who have marketable skills lucky or perhaps simply fortunate because even the talent and circumstances allowing one to acquire skills is luck or good fortune.

Regardless, the 1st image of the accident shows how well the MBZ crumple zone works. I saw a 126 hit as bad and all 4 doors opened perfectly indicating an undamaged passenger compartment. These old diesels are good 1st cars for our loved newly driving children - big slow, safe.

Was that the case on Stormcloud?

Post Moving On.....

This is a sad day yet you're making the best of it and that's great .

I guess I was lucky in that I was born with mechanical aptitude and enough drive to ensure I liked being busy, working and learning .

I feel kinda sorry for those who slip through the cracks or get caught in life's switches however, no feeling for those who flat refuse to get any job .

Very good news, after the bad news. That looks like some serious work. That will be a car with character.

I am not sure it was a car. Notice that the rear
bumper is unscathed so it was fairly tall. It also
had a pretty stout bumper from the way its
wrinkled in a very focused way...

I'm talking about Desert Rose. Will reincarnate parts of Stormcloud.

I am all too familiar with his pain. I was once an E30-aholic. I loved that car. I already told the story of my second one going to the great steel cauldron in the sky - rear ended by an urban tank.

It was tough but I moved up to diesel Benzes. Not as fast but better.

Impermanence is swift, say the Zen masters.

I definitely wouldn't have let the driver off. They knew they had no insurance yet drove anyway, and weren't even careful. Might have even been drunk or on drugs. No forgiveness for scummy hit and run drivers.
