1983 240D Throttle Linkage Diagram

Hi folks!

Does anyone have a throttle linkage diagram with the correct lengths of the linkages and how to set up/adjust for a 1983 240D with AT?

I searched all over and found one for the 300D but of course it's a different engine.

Tried downloading the FSM from Startekinfo.com but it seems it doesn't work anymore since Adobe Flash went away (Any recommendations on how to download if possible would be great!)

Thanks!

On the 1983 240ds. Perhaps some other years as well. Up beside the manifold there is kind of a u joint assembly. There are two rubbers there.

With age they rot off and you get excessive slop. Both those rubbers as there are two of them are probably the cheapest part Mercedes sells. Getting the part number can be difficult. If you think about it the original lengths of the linkages cannot change themselves.

If someone holds the pedal to the floor. If the arm on the injection pump is not moving all the way. The lack of those rubbers will do it.

One person I purchased a 1983 240d drove it an estimated five years without those rubbers. His performance and top speed where pathetic. I just made up a temporary fix and it blew his mind. He told me since he brought it it only topped out at around fifty miles an hour.

The problem of course if they rot off how would a person know they should be there? I purchased that car out of New Jersey probably 15-20 years ago.

You never believe the odometer on them without real proof. The indicated millage was about 200k. It ran really well. Why did they fail? Perhaps the car was run with old motor mounts or something. I just do not know. The function of that universal looking thing is to isolate vibration perhaps.

Not what you are asking for I realise. Just general information on the 83 240d throttle linkage.

Thank you for the heads up! It truly helps when these mystery symptoms pop up!

What are these "rubbers" of which you speak? Not sure what you're referring to with "up beside the manifold".

I also have an '83 240D and don't recall seeing anything resembling a rubber u-joint in that area. As for linkage on the intake, I thought the linkage "over there" was for the butterfly/throttle valve, which is related to the EGR system (which many members, apparently, completely remove). Would it be possible to get a little more detail?

Thanks

The joint is not rubber. It is two U shaped pieces of metal. On one of those there are two small black looking rubber bands. I guess they would stop metal to metal contact. Yet if they rot and fall off they present too much slop in the system.

Just follow the linkage along and you should find it. I still have that car but it is not available to me right now. Also it was many years ago I dealt with that.

I have to assume but may be wrong that all the 83 240d throttle linkages where the same. The only thing that may or may not make a difference was my car was a stick shift. Why I specifically mentioned it is if those black rubber or plastic inserts have rotted off. I do not think the linkage will operate quite right if an attempt is made to compensate for them missing.

The part I am mentioning is also out in the open. Not obscured by something else.

In a way the simplest test is again to have someone put the pedal to the floor. While you make sure the lever on the injection pump is going to full. With the rubbers gone I do not think it is possible.

If someone before you tried to adjust the linkage with the rubbers missing. I am not sure what the effect would be.

Those dates should be read as "starting in 1981." It should cover your model.

Late 240D Throttle Rods

I don't think those are *quite* the same .

Some of the rods -may- be the same and use the same lengths but some are visibly different from my 1982 USA model with slushbox .

In 1983 Mercedes issued another, updated version of the OM616 book .

I'm still looking for it .

1982 1983 240D Throttle Rods

O.K., sorry I'm late but I have others things and not a regular internet connection .

Anyway, I dug out my 1983 M-B factory engine manual and it has the diagram and various lengths and a detailed step by step of how to adjust each rod test it then adjust the next one, in the proper order, being a German car of course there's a specific order you *must* follow....

My problem now is : how to copy the various pages and then get them posted as peach Parts has banned me from posting anything .

The " ASIN ‏ : ‎ B000H7LF50 " is for the newer, January 1991 edition, this covers the EGR system in detail .

At the back of the book is "Extract from introductory brochure " ~ this is section 14 and 30 for the 1982 & 1983 OM616 engines in the U.S.A. .

It runs from page 19 ~ 44 and is packed with diagrams, photographs and text .

I *think* the 'ASIN' # is for looking up the book via book sellers.....

I got lucky one day in the rain and stumbled across two box fulls of factory M-B, shop manuals, many of which covered my brother's W126 chassis and OM602 & OM603 engines, sadly most of the books were damp, I took all the W123 based books home and dried the wet pages out one by one and still have them .

This late version engine manual is about the only one that's not water damaged .

Anyway, if you can teach me how to get these copied into PDF format I'll happily let someone post them here, this is the good stuff indeed .

Enine Shop Manuals OM 616 & 617 '82 >

Oops ~ I forgot to add a link to the copies I found on Amazon, I'm sure there are many cheaper places to look, I only posted *one* ASIN number, each copy has a different ASIN number corresponding to the publishing date .

Good luck hunting ! .

Get this done right and your 240D will still be slow but a joy to drive nevertheless .

Engine manual

Thanks Nate! Great info. Did a quick search with the ASIN# you supplied and Amazon popped up with 3 manuals from various sellers. They range in price from approx. $60-$65. As you mentioned, there may be better deals "out there". Hard to say, these days, with prices being what they are, etc.
At any rate, you really "hit the jackpot" with your "find"!
Too bad they were wet, but you can't find a "pot o gold" at the end of a rainbow without a little water....:)
Wish I could be of help with your generous offer to download the pages. I'm all thumbs with "that type of thing" and it's always more difficult and involved than I think it should be...at this point in the "evolution of the computer/internet" at least (in my humble opinion). Al Gore sure does have a LOT more work to do.
I have to lean on my son pretty hard for all my "tech support".....I'd be lost without his skill.

Factory Shop Manuals

Well ;

At least one of the ones I posted the link to was $45....

All of them had the individual ASIN # in the description so you should have more things to search, just MAKE SURE it's the 1982 or later version ! .

I hope these load, I'm still working on the part numbers....

I have a box full of odds and ends throttle parts. If you show me a picture perhaps I can find what you need. If I do I will make you an excellent deal.
