My sunroof catches on the wind deflector and won't close...

As the roof slides forward on Benzina, the leading edge butts up against the dropping wind deflector and stops dead.
Very risky on the fingers to hold it down while running the roof closed...

I'm not 100% sure but my guess is your sunroof (it's manual right?) is just like the one in my '85 300. The sunroof runs on nylon glides that may be worn. Look to see when you close the roof if it is flush with the top of the car. If not it is possible to adjust it but you should inspect the glides first and for that you'll need to take the roof panel off. It's detailed in the CD if you have it. If not I can fax it to you. The second possibility is the two levers that push the wind deflector down as you close the roof. Are these bent or badly worn? You may be able to adjust them as well. I've had my sunroof panel off to lube it and it's not a hard job. Just be careful you don't drop the panel or get grease on your headliner. If you've never greased your sunroof (it's a 30,000 mile RMP) I'd bet the glides are a bit worn. You may be able to clean them up and adjust it enough to work fine. Give it a try.

When you say roof panel are you referring to the whole sunroof?

Mine is electric, and it works okay.

It must be the slider thingies which push down the deflector on its journey-they are worn down and don't have enough "travel" to push the deflector down far enough...

Wadja tink?

See if you can "build up" the top side of the sliders a bit with tape or something and try closing it. If you can get the tape on so it's smooth and the panel will slide over it at least it will tell you if that's the problem. If it is I'd see if a slight bend until you find another set from a wreck might work.

had the same problem on my SD except it would only do it when going over 60 or so. My fix was to adjust those rods, there should be a small strait slot screw in each side, i beleive you tigten them, but it could be the other way. At any rate, play with it and youll figure it out

Ryan,

That is how mine started, when I was going at 60 or so, it would do it. Then the speeds dropped, and now it will hit when stopped.
I shall look for an adjustment.
Thanks, Ed

just to clarify what rods i'm talking about, it is the rods that the sunroof slides over and *should* push down to push down the deflector. At the front there should be two little screws, you either screw them in or out, i forget which.
