1982 300CD, weird electrical problem
When I was working on cleaning the banjo bolt to the ALDA a tool inadvertently arced from the battery to ground for a split second. (Who hasn't done that?) Afterward, the fuse to the dash gauges went out. So, I replaced it. Replacing that fuse made it so the gauges now work. Not not the dash lights. Now, I notice that the tail lights don't work and the dash lights don't work. I don't see any blown fuses. Any ideas what wire could cause this?

Don't rely on a visual inspection of fuses, a test light or a VOM is needed to confirm that voltage comes into, through and exits the fuse. If you don't have a test light they are a necessary tool and are inexpensive. For now try rotating all of the fuses in place that have anything to do with the circuit in question. Fuse maintenance/cleanliness will keep many electrical gremlins at bay on these cars.
FWIW, I doubt you damaged anything due to the arcing. Good luck!!!

Thanks! I'll try that. I agree that it's unlikely that the arcing damaged anything.

The test light is your best friend, don't buy a cheapo one, buy a good quality one with a long cord, NOT COILED ! .
If you've not done so yet, replace every fuse that's gray / silver in color .

Could also look for a test light with a built in voltmeter.

Just a wild thought, have you tried pulling a bulb and seeing if it’s burned out?
Maybe the arc took out a few bulbs?

So, I disconnected the battery and with the fuse cover removed, I removed the 8mm nut that holds the fuse panel to the frame of the car. This way, I was able to get a look at the wires leading to the fuse panel. I wanted to see if any of them were burnt or disconnected. It all looked fine. I put it all back together and now everything works fine!!!
I'm sorry I was not able to find the exact cause to report in case others have the same problem. But, thanks for your suggestions!! |

Did you test the fuses in the manner suggested?

Yes, all fuses were fine. I'm not sure why everything started working.
