190D or Time Bomb....Continued!

Hello Diesel Fans,
Several months ago, I posted the sad tale of my friends' 1985 400,000 mile, 190D.
The previous owner had the vacuum pump roller disintegrate inside the timing cover. My friend opted to install a used pump and not worry about what fragments lay inside the engine. 4 weeks later the chunk of timing cover with the fan belt tensioner broke off.

I just completed replacing the timing cover and fishing the remaining vacuum pump bits out of the oil pan. there were 10 balls, half a bearing race, 5 bits of plastic bearing cage and a couple of unidentifiable slivers.
The inside of the old timing cover had scratches around the broken area but the new one had similar markings. Both covers looked like casting flaws had been ground off in the same area. There was no visible damage to the double-row timing chain or guides. The new cover casting also had more reinforcement around the belt tensioner mounting area. I could continue to assume that a bit of bearing wedged between the chain and cover but my question is....

Does anyone know about weakness or breakage of these timing covers due to fatigue or vibration of the fan belt tensioner on these 2.2 L diesels?

After 12+ hours labor, the car rattled off this morning under its own power, including an extra rattle from the transmission.
(Hey! I agreed to repair the timing cover, not restore the whole car!)

Stay tuned for possible further installments in the saga of '190D or Time Bomb'.

Happy Motoring, Mark

1,200 on engine

I just had my engine rebuilt and clutch replaced. Had about 1,200 miles on the new stuff, everything working well, and the car got creamed the other nite by 15-yr old in suburban trying to avoid my neighbor's cat!!! Bottom line? I may get the salvage back because it makes me want to cry to junk the new engine and clutch. Has 5-spd that is in great shape. Unfortunately, the accident bent the frame. I'm either looking to put my new parts into a cherry 190D body ('84 or '85), or I'll be looking to part out the drivetrain. Mine is a 1984 190D with 287K before rebuild. Did not need honing out, as the cylinders were tight, but had two burned valves, and the timing chain guides had disintegrated. All that's been replaced. Was running like a dream until hit.

It's always too bad to hear about 190D's dying. I love mine so much and I can't bear to have something like that happen to it. These things are great little cars, even though most mercedes fanatics like to hate on the whole 201 line. On some forums they turn their nose up at my questions just because it's about a 190...

They are great cars, I don't care what anyone says! Good luck with getting another one!
