My once dead battery still lives!
Some of you may recall our discussion last year when I must have left the courtesy light on for a week or so when I was working on a scraping noise! Battery ended up completely dead (0.89V)
This thread starting about post #11. Well the battery recovered and is still in service! We have had one of the coldest Januarys I can remember. Overnight temperatures of -23C several days in a row several times. My 300D is in an outdoor enclosed and unheated garage which helps. I have no block or battery heater. With Covid and other car available, I haven't needed to drive the diesel much. But about once a week I do. I make sure I drive for about 1/2hr at least. So far the car has started first shot every time. Battery seems strong. Haven't and any need to re-charge. I guess I dodged a bullet. Battery is old, but no sign of needing replacement yet. Current winter usage is as bad as it gets other than having car stored outdoors. Anyway, just wanted to conclude the story ![]()

From other thread: "Tried to charge with smart charger - It wouldn't even start to charge. Hooked up one trickle charger - It got battery up to 0.91V and then displayed an error light. Used my other, newer battery maintainer. It got battery up to 5.6V before signing off! Hooked up my main 15A smart charger. It now worked. Left it charging overnight until charger said FUL !
My wife is just going out to use it for shopping. Her car is outdoors and covered with snow. Hope it starts ![]() OK - I just heard the diesel sound!!! Now she has to get it up our long snow covered driveway! OK- No problem! Off she goes. Gotta love these old cars ![]()

You probably know this,
Once the battery appears to be fully charged it's condition can probably be improved significantly by using the reconditioning setting that a lot of smart chargers have. Best to disconnect one of the cables to keep the higher voltage spikes from possibly damaging something else. I used to have batteries that appeared to be fully charged but didn't have much cranking duration. Read about it and bought a charger that had the option. I've used it several times since and typically have been able to get a few more years life out of the battery. On my latest AGM type battery which provides better cranking power, I'll typically do a conditioning cycle every now and then. Probably about every three months. |

Your battery was not dead just taking a nap.

The new smart chargers are so much better than those old units we probably all had. I still have a couple, but they don't get used unless th smart charger doesn't like the battery

Looks like I didn't conclude this thread. The battery finally died about 3 weeks ago. It had a good and long life

The battery out of a newly acquired 300d Parker had a 10 year old battery , the newer style charger wouldn’t even recognize it when plugged in and given some time . Fortunately I have a good source for reconditioned battery’s that keep some H8 s in the mix . A reconditioned Mercedes battery was what they brought to me at the counter ,$85 and that is getting installed soon as I find that good / old battery tray I had laying around .

I learned to do this when we sailed. After night sail or battery would be dead. Did as described at it recovered. Lasted for about 6 years doing that! I was tempted to try once more with my 300D battery, but after 12 years, decided it had done it's duty ![]()
