Different versions of OM648 injectors

I have an injector on my 05 that needs to be replaced. After much research on if you can use 647 injectors, supposedly they are all pretty much the same as well as other 648 part numbers. I had planned on ordering a 647 injector but ended up going with a 6480700187 from Germany. I suspected but was not sure from my research that this is an earlier version 648 injector that does not have the coding for smooth running adaptation in SDS. Injector arrived and that looks to be correct to me. It just has a 6 digit number on the injector but not the alpha numeric combination. So I do not think this number is the correction coding. The question is, will it run smooth with this version of injector installed, or should I send it back and order a 647 injector with the IMA coding on it?

I knew you were going to have trouble with that car, the price was so low for a reason...

There's a document in the WIS that addresses injector replacment. If you have access to the WIS the document is SI07.16-P-0002A.

As usual when I read these document I come away kind of confused.

Your new 648 070 01 87 injector is mentioned in the WIS document as an non IMA (unclassified) injector. It appears that IMA injectors were phased into production around 2004 with the CDI2 ECU control unit and there's a note on the first page that states...

' when replacing an injector the spare part needs to be ordered as specified by the diagnosis identifier'

I'm not sure what a 'diagnosis identifier' is and the document doesn't make it clear, at least to me but I think 'diagnosis identifier' is a feature of the CDI2 ECU where IMA coding was introduced. They also mention that if an injector is replaced that contains an IMA specification the new specification must be entered into the CDI control unit using the adaptations screen.

From this it would appear to me that they want IMA injectors to be replaced with IMA injectors right?

At the end of the document there's a compatability table that shows where IMA and non IMA injectors can be used. That table clearly shows that you can use non IMA injectors on the later CDI2, and later, 'diagnosis identifier' ECU's and there is no adaptation coding required? This seems to contradict the earlier information that IMA should be replaced with IMA and new coding.

It also shows that IMA injectors are NOT backward compatible with earlier non IMA ECU's.

The document also states that IMA injectors are categorized into 3 different levels based on the fuel metering characteristics and that these classifications exist to make it possible to adapt the engine software across smaller incremental ranges.

Maybe the classification scheme is to get the base adaptations closer before the adaptation process begins? Not sure.

So it's as clear as mud, I think sometimes things get lost in the translation process from German to English in the WIS.

If I were in your shoes I'd get the IMA correct injector. According to the EPC the correct injector as of the date of my EPC in 2016 is 648 070 03 87.

Thanks for the info. I do have WIS so I will check that out shortly. What I do not want to do is install this injector and it run rough or something like that, then can't return it. I am leaning toward returning this one and ordering either the later IMA 648 or a 647 injector.

I ended up sending back the non IMA injector and ordering the IMA version. It is supposed to be here tomorrow so I will install it over the weekend. I have another injector I think might be leaking so I will pull it and reseal while am at it.
