W126 fuel filter change mess

I did my fuel filters today on my 350SD. Far from the first time. Fuel was on the light, so very low.

As soon as I released the main bolt, it started seeping out. But it never stopped. And to make it worse, somehow it was next to impossible to coax the filter out.

I don’t know how much came out, a gallon? A pint?

And since the install was equally hard, I had to tilt the filter on its side, spilling a lot of diesel purge that I used to prefill the filter.

What’s the issue? This car is new to me. I don’t recall having this issue on any other 616/617/602/603 that I own. The most recent were a 602 and the 603 in my w140. Neither made any mess at all.

I do think proper practice is to have a loop in the rubber hose going to/from the prefilter. This w126 doesn’t have that.

What gives?

Maybe I have too much pressure in my fuel tank??

Pressure in the tank would do it, as would having the rear of the vehicle higher than the front.

Vehicle was totally flat. This car does build pressure in the tank. I’ve never seen it in any of my other cars. Maybe that was it…

If it builds pressure, you have rust in the relief hose, or the pressure/vaccum pod is damaged.

What’s the best way to check these? I’m not sure I’m familiar with a pressure/vacuum pod. I know there’s a tank vent under the car someplace.

Iirc, it is a bell shaped device under the passengers wheelwell.
Pull your fuel cap off, disconnect the bell and blow air through the line.
See if its clogged. The tank can actually implode if the bell fails...
