Exclamation Window Seal Replacement

I'm going to replace the rubber seal on the rear windshield of my '81 240D. I'm going to use the service manual CD. However, according to the CD, after I install the window with the new seal, I need to apply MB Window Sealing Compound. I contacted the local MB dealership and they said it would have to be ordered from Germany and that the cost is $22.50! My question is, is there any other readily available sealing compound I can use?

Also, how much does the rear windshield weigh?

Good chance you will find some rust holes under the seal. Mine took a fair amount of Bondo.

Talk to glass shop, but I believe it's urethane sealant they use.Silicone will react with the steel and won't last very long. The glass guy that did my front and rear seals 'bedded'the seal area and then installed the window, next he slipped the nozzle between the body and the seal and filled that area. Finally he slipped the nozzle between the glass and the seal and forced some in there.I was lucky to find only a small rust spot under the seal, which the glass guy primed and painted before installation.Good luck,Kyle.

If you will contact your local 3M rep he will have exactly what you need. They publish incredibly helpful and exacting instructions concerning the glass installations... also do a search on windshield sealant on this forum... Greg
