It works intermittently. It did start fairly consistently if I left the defrost button pushed in, and started the car, but that's not working right now. Do I need to pull the center console? How do I go about it? It's getting cold, and it always works if I bring it into a dealer.

I have been warned (but can't confirm) that the brush material that Bosch uses on their fans/blower is considerably softer than the replacemntss available in the US - say at ACE. That means that the replacement brushes will wear the armature MUCH faster. That may not be a concern for a year or two, but it IS something to be aware of. Proper brushes are available from George_Murphy@compuserve.com for $15-20 a pair or were a few years ago. There may be other sources too, but I don't know of any. The differance in price is consideable, but the motor should last somewhat longer if the armature isn't already seriously worn.

So I spent 6 bucks to get a pair of brushes from ACE over a year ago and used them to fix a motor that was dated 1982. You think I am really worried about any wear on the armature? I could see a real nice groove in the existing armature when I replaced the bushes the first time and the thing is still going strong and in FL. gets used 365 days a year. When it dies IF brushes will fix it I will go the same route, if I need a new motor then I will go looking. At 20 years old the one I have now has already got a second life.

So I took out the blower motor and fan. Got the motor out of the plastic frame and lo and behold this is a Bosch motor and the bearing cap is staked in. I popped the ears back with a small chisel and took off the cap and then the brush plate. A couple of bigger brushes (from Ace) were cut down and soldered in. After a good bit of anguish trying to get the cap to go back on and stay, I reverted back to my farmer mentality and got out the wire feed and put a few small beads around the end. Voila, she hums a tune more breathy than before but still no wind other than on defrost.
Problem #2:
Mine is a 1980 CD and the buttons are vertical. Try as might, I can't figure out how the control panel gets out short of taking out the whole center console.

WallNight - I may best your cheapskate title. I pulled the brush tension springs out and elongated them before putting them back in so taht they would apply more pressure to the remaining brushes. It didn't even cost me any aluminum foil! Do I win?

I haven't removed your particular panel but the horizontal wood panel is merely stuck in place with a double-sided tape, so to remove it you need something very thin to work gradually in behind the wood panel to work it loose. If you've the ac/heater that has the chrysler unit under the hood, I certainly feel sorry for you. It was Mercedes one huge disaster.

By the way, I'm glad to see that someone other than myself opened up the sealed motor and repaired it. It is possible to reseal the cap by using a sharp puch type chisel and repeen the original lips back over again.

sometimes i have to wiggle my ignition key to get the blower working. I guess it's not a motor problem... but it is a blower issue.

Is it possible to remove the blower without removing the dash on my 1982 300tdt?

Yes.

Remove the passenger knee panel, a few screws to undo, unplug the blower motor and it will drop right down. piece of cake;)

Are people allowed to post pictures on this board? As great as this story is, it could use some pics. Just wondering...carry on.
