Question valve adjustments

just a quick question.. when making valve adjustments is it recomended that the engine is running or shut off? last time i adjusted valves with the engine off it sent the piston out the side of the engine lol but that what you get for owning a ford hardly even touched the sucker either

thanx

off and cold. engine running would seem to indicate that one would be working with hydraulic compensation on the lifters. not the case here.
