Unhappy Flying 240D pulleys

Last night my daughter, and a visiting friend were driving home from a movie when, going 35 or so with my '79' 240D when they thought they ran over some debris in the road. Shortly they lost power steering and she started to heat up. They stopped and found NO belts at all in the forward part of the engine compartment in fact no pulleys to drive the belts . By the time I got on the scene they had found the missing pulleys along side the road. I spent this morning putting things back together with 3 allen bolts from my parts car which ("80" 240D) has 6 bolts holding on its pulleys as opposed just 3 on the "79" (there are only 3 holes in the pulleys too). I wonder if other folks lost pulleys and they went to a 6 bolt system after '79". 2 of my bolts were sheered off but there were 6 threaded holes in the harmonic balancer so I could rotate the pulleys accordingly. Might be something to check on next time your crawling around under your early 240D. Has this happened to anyone else out there?

Only on my 1962 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 -- in that case, the harmonic balancer bolt walked out. Wasn't in deep enough because someone added a pully for the addon AC.

Makes one check the bolts ever oil change, eh?

Very smart daughter you have, by the way!

Peter

I have read other posts where foks have lost the balancer and all. That must really be exciting if you have any speed on not to mention what could happen to some poor hich hiker standing alongside the road.

Wow, Bill I would say you have been living right. Putting things back togather was a real PIA as you have to line up 3 holes down in the depths of that outboard pulley where you cannt see even with the radiator out and it was a hot day for us coastel folks who dont do well if it gets over 75 degrees. Good Luck

So I guess we now add pulley mount bolts in addition to the engine shock bracket bolt... .. everytime we check the oil!
Thanks for the tip Stevo and Bill, I have to agree with him, you must be living right.
