190d revived
some of yall may remember I picked up a 84 190d 5speed a few months ago. she was a basket case. well I just got through rebuilding the motor and getting her put back together. thanks to phill and fastlane I got her going for about $500.00. so far she purrs like a kitten. so glad I didnt sell her. rebuilding this motor is a breeze. she slips right out in 2hrs with tranny and didnt even have to retime her since I left the crank in. what a great feeling to get her going myself. Probably would have cost $3500.00 easy to have it done. Just wanted to brag on my mb diesel. What a wonderful addiction to have
have a great one hillbilly |

What parts did you replace? Any machining? How many miles were on it? Any damage? I have a 190D 2.2 that has about 250K and is using a small amount of oil. On a hot day after a hard run the oil pressure will go to 1 atmoshere at idle. So I'll be due sometime. TIA

My 190D just got totaled!!!
The other nite a suburuban with a 15-yr old driver ploughed into my car and did so much damage, it's not worth fixing. I had only 1200 miles on the rebuilt engine and clutch. I am keeping the salvage, in case someone has a good bodywith lunched engine that I can put together, or . . . if someone wants to buy the parts, specifically what's under the hood, that can be arranged. The car can actually drive, but will need a temp setup for tail lights (my trunk was crunched all the way to under the back windshield, although the windshield survived without a scratch). If anyone is interested, let me know. Contact me at piccolovic@juno.com, or piccolov@3rivers.net.
The specs are: 1984 MB, 2.2L diesel engine. It had 287K when I had the engine rebuilt and the clutch replaced. There are a lot of other new parts on car . . . even the adjuster stated that the car was obviously well maintained and in very good condition before the accident.

heh I keep replying to all of your posts... But have you considered parting the car out? You could probably make up for your loss! Cause there are some things I'd like to replace with mine. I'm sure that with your back end damage the lock for the trunk is trashed... I could use one of those. I also wouldn't mind the plastic part for the grill. I also am in need of the air vent assembly for the center (vents themselves and the thing they mount in w/ all the switches). Mine got brittle and cracked. My vents are also cracked and don't adjust at all.
Let me know if you're gonna part it out and we can talk about pricing and all that good stuff.

Grill was dented when pushed into trailer hitch of roommate's SUV. The lock popped out of trunk lid and may be salvageable. May be able to pull the vents also. Probably will buy the salvage, but my cousin has 85 with thrashed interior, so she gets seats, carpets, visors, etc. I'll be happy to make arrangements with you on the other parts. Will get a clearer idea of how much they'll charge for salvage buyout.

How are your headlight surrounds? My foglights are all 'foggy' (how ironic) and cracked in places and the paint stuff on them is peeling.
My air vents all have the little adjustment thing to get the side to side adjustment broken off. Well 2 of the 4 have that broken. Are they all the same color? I think mine's black... I broke the little screw point for the vacuum control of the trunk lock. I was going to fix it with some glue or something... I'm going to try to fix it tomorrow as I broke it today. Let me know if you want to help me out with this stuff! Thanks man.

Three out of four light assemblies were demolished in the accident. My vents are black, and they worked. I don't know about the trunk lock vacuum stuff, but I can look, after we pry away the crumpled deck lid. In any case, I could probably send you the lock setup after disconnecting what's left, and you can let me know if it's usable. I had the lock itself replaced about a year ago, after I snapped the key in it.
Also, how easily will a 190E accomodate my engine/tranny? What years? Could I put the 5-spd in a car that had auto trans? My mechanic in LA is willing and able, but not specifically a MB expert. He's willing to R&R the engine he rebuilt into practically anything that will accomodate it!!! Vicki

I'll bet you were thankfull for the diesel and your headrest when the fuel tank came your way. Takes a hard hit on a MB to shove the trunk under the rear glass.

190d has 333k left crank in so only replaced rod brgs, rings and had head rebuilt with new guides. wish i had replaced timing chains and guids but i wasnt sure if this was going to cure all probs since it was smoking so bad. the cylinders looked good with hone marks still visible except in a couple of places. but i didnt have block mic'd since boring adds $100.00 a hole it was out of my budget. I should have said sleeving not boring.
I have a little more confidence now so i'll not be as worried about putting in a little more money next time. oh yeah i'm curious what it cost to have wrecked 190d eng rebuilt? thanks hillbilly |

The lower half of engine was tight and looked new, even though had 287K miles on it. For good measure, he replaced rear seal/bearings, but the head had to be rebuilt and two valves replaced. He is an old family friend, so he was concerned about the fact I was about to move near the Canadian border and replaced glow plugs, hydraulic lifters, etc. whether I needed them or not. I basically paid $600 over the cost of parts, but it would have cost me approx $2500 if I got a full bill. The clutch would have been another $900, cause the parts were $477, not counting labor. I believe he also replaced water pump and oil pump for good measure and told me it was good for another 300K miles minimum, if I could manage to avoid overheating the car over the next 10 years!!! (yeah, right!!!).
Well, I have a drivetrain for sale, if anyone is interested. I can have it crated and freighted to anywhwere!!!! |
