Thumbs down EGR and hard shifting + smoke

Well I've noticed this for a while now.

If I have the EGR valve connected to the vacuum system the car would shift hard and blow a small amount of smoke (visible in the mirror). It would also shift hard.

now if I take it off the car would shift VERY VERY smoothly and precisely (right after). However after a while it would start shifting a lil harder but the smoke never came back.

Am I doing something wrong here? How is the line meant to be plugged?

I just plugged a screw in the line from the vacuum regulator. I also put another rubber piece to the EGR and put a screw in it as well.

How is it supposed to be done? I haven't tried the BB trick just because I can't find a BB... :p

Any suggestions and how could the shifting be affected?

Thanks

ahhh the workings of the early 80s diesel tranny

are as much of a mystery as the ACC. You plug the line to the egr valve. You don't have to plug the fitting on the egr valve itself.

You will need to check for vacuum leaks and start "tuning" out the vacuum system to the tranny. If you completely disconnect the line to the tranny it will not shift out of low gear. If the vacuum signal to the tranny stays hi (as you mash the gas) it will shift smooth/lazy and you may have some flaring. As you floor it the vacuum signal to the tranny should fall off. You can run a test on this by teeing into the vacuum line to the tranny with a mighty vac. You can try adjusting the modulator on the side of the tranny. Do a search on vacuum modulator and you will come up with the way to do this. Turn the adj counter clockwise to soften it up some. Don't turn it much at a time - one full turn equals .4 bar. Turning it clockwise will harden up the shifts. If you soften it up too much you could get into some unwanted flaring.
