Update on the 300CD I'm thinking about

Well, I said it was perfect but that is nOT the case. My friend just e-mailed me the exterior pictures. The interior is indeed perfect. The exterior has some rust. Mostly around the holes used for the jack. I'm going to try to attach them to this post. If anyone has any thoughts let me know. He'll take 6500 (the car has 80,000) but after seeing the exterior problems, I'm thinking more like 5500 tops. I'd appreciate any thoughts on a fair price. I don't want to insult the guy.

The pics are too big to post. If anyone cares to see them to give me an opinion, just give me your e-mail address and I'll send them to you.

Actually, my advice is to go ahead and offer a price below $5,500.

Why? Owners of cars for sale always have an inflated value of what the car is really worth.

There are relatively few people in the market for this kind of car. I'm sure he's been trying to sell it for a while.

Offering a low price makes him lose confidence in what the car is really worth. It makes him feel insecure. Used car dealers are in the market to make money on a car. Private party sellers are just trying to get rid of a car. Offering a price below your objective also gives him you some room to go up to $5,500 in price so he can feel that he's negotiated well.

I dunno what state you are in. Around here, once the iron moths take hold, it would be tough getting 1500 for it.

That's not soooooo bad.Check on the under-side of the doors as well as inside the trunk behind the wheels.Like Palangi said, once the rust starts it takes a lot of work to stop it.Good luck in your search.

He probably thinks he can get that much because 300CD were only sold in the US and not in Europe. I think that less than 8000 units of that type got sold here.
Betcha he is thinking "collectors car"...dunno, he might be right.

Ouch!.. Ok I have seen worse. My neighbor has a '80 300SD that has rocker panels that were completely gone, yet the car road as solid as a tank. These rocker panels can be replaced. Try ADSITCO.com, they list body parts like this. As for the price, he's crazy. This car is obviously a project car.

300CD

Unless your money is burning a hole in your pocket, save it and look around, there are a few older CD's on ebay, one of them is in NY maybe you can compare cars.

Go to www.kellybluebook.com Click on "My car's value" and price it out as a private party sale. This will give you a pretty sobering idea of the car's value.

I wouldn't give much more than 4k for it... depending on what's been replaced under the hood. It seems like once you buy it everything starts to crap out on you and now you're into 10k total with the car and you've still got a rusty benz. That rust isn't bad, my car has rust, not as bad as the one you're looking into but still what that car has is tolerable and won't be a problem for years.

But I'd look for another. There's LOTS of 'em out there!

(like my new avatar?)
