Engine Timing, 5 cylinder diesel
Hello,
i have a very engine specific question to ask all of you who know MB Diesels. Im about to put my injection pump back onto the car and im trying to get the timing right the pump is locked at injection position for 1st cylinder the marks on the crankshaft show 15 degrees ATDC which is the injection pump spec timing the valve marks match The question is when the marks on the camshaft match are they set for 15 degrees ATDC or 0 degrees TDC??? Need answer on this fast thank you in advance 1986 190D 2.5 |

Set the timing marks on the cam so when they are at TDC the one on the crank is at TDC. Install the injection pump with the spline lined up with the crank at the appropriate place as indicated by the manual. Disregard the mark on the cam when installing the injection pump - just go by the mark on the crankshaft.

Yeah - what Jim said. The cam marks should be aligned with the TDC indicator at zero, if the chain is new and perfect. It is more likely to indicate 3-4 degrees off from TDC at the crank (BTDC, I think.) Ignore the cam marks and use the TDC indicator to install the IP. If you can, try setting the pump to 14 ATDC (1 degree advanced, and at the far side of spec), this may provide a slight performance increase.
Have fun! |
