Hey Dave,

H2O2 and I did get 8sec 0-60 times (G-tech pro) with our intercoolers and turned up pumps.

When I first got my 99 it was no faster than my modified 87. The aggressive speed tuning chip, itg foam air filter and hollowed out cat fixed that!

I was sad to let it go, but I needed the finances to get the 99 and my uncle was giving to me at basically half price. It did go to a good owner who will be taking care of it well.

I will miss it, but I am enjoying the 99 a lot too!

my 87 300d turbo chirps second, but the rear suspension is so floppy and all over the place im not ever sure what the hell is going on aft of the front seats.

but i will agree with the power aspect of this car - i drove so many 126's before I found this one, it felt like a formula one car in comparision.

most of those old 126's couldnt get out of the way of their own deadly smoke plume, so the 124 is a refreshing alternative. Good luck in your quest for sub 10 sec 0-60 times. These things are built more for top end than acceleration, hell i think ive had mine over 120 and its got a quarter million miles on it.

The floppy rear suspension is possibly just two control arms, there are several that can go bad but when replaced your car will feel much tighter! The '87 300D turbo/124 and the 126/SDL is what MB strived for YEARS to attain, then it was only produced for one year (two in the case of the 300TD/wagon)
Do you have the updated vac pump? (It will have 4 torx head bolts holding the cover on) If not please plan on getting one (soon!)

Actually, Mercedes built the 124.133 (W124 300D with 603 turbo engine) from 1986 to about 1995. However, it was only imported to the USA in 1987, thanks to annoying EPA regs. But it was sold in Europe for about ten years. They even got a 4Matic version (124.333), along with the wagon equivalents (124.193 2WD wagon, 124.393 4Matic wagon). We got cheated here in the States... I'd love to have a late-production 124.133, say a 1995 model with all the factory updates!

The main problem wasn't EPA regs as much as it was very low demand and changes in the regs -- the local dealer told my friend the mechanic here he couldn't get people to even sit in a diesel, let alone test drive one in the late 80s. Very low sales for even the 2.5L, which is a wonderful car. Nearly the same performance as the 300e, but 32-36 mpg. No one was interested, and MB dropped them. Ditto for the 605 and 606 engines -- they sat on the lot forever, no one would even get in them.

Pretty foolish considering the milage they get, bet a whole lot of people wish they'd gotten one!

Peter
