Changing Tranny/Fluid
I am ready to change the tranny fluid/filter. A couple of questions:
1.) on the 1979 SD, does the pan require a new seal/gasket? 2.) what is the best tranny fluid to use? I prefer Mobil 1 synthetic products. What grade/rating is appropriate? And please include any tips on how to do the best job possible. Thanks. |

I've done this a couple of times. I ordered the gasket with the filter as its kind of a package deal. The key was to barely touch the starter until the torch converter bolt (allen) comes into view. In that way it enables you to completely drain the system. This is in addition to the tranny pan bolt.
This is a very messy job so have a large mat below the collecting pans. The last key that I remember and some others can be more specific is that when refilling, you do NOT add all the fluid at once. There is a process of adding some and running the engine through a couple of shifts and then adding the rest. "dieseldaddy" has the recommended order and amounts. Thanks DieselDon, is there just one grade of Mobil 1 synthetic tranny fluid (dexron II, III, IV)? If not, which is the correct grade?

Just some quick advice. I just changed my tranny fluid, and let me tell you, it is very very easy to overfill. The reason being is that the stick gets smeared with tranny fluid and is hard to tell where its indicating. I thought everything was fine until I test drove the car, it started to slip from 3rd to overdrive, so I immediately knew I did something wrong. I looked at all the vacuum hoses, then checked the fluid, it was way over. I went back under the car, loosened the plug, let out about a quart, and test drove again. Car is perfect.

I don't know about different grades of Mobil 1 syn tranny fluid. The Autozone by me only had one choice and its currently sitting in three of my automatic tranmissions.

Thanks, Don. I'll go spend some time perusing the aisles at the auto parts store (one of my favorite pastimes).
