nice write up by gregs on oil cooler line r&r

gregs provided a very helpful post the other day on reparing leaking oil cooler lines. i face the same problem. i am lazy and want to make the job as easy as possible. even if it means making a horse's petutie out of myself and possibly upsetting the sensibilities of the good people here. i continue. what would prevent me from doing the following: disconnecting the oil cooler line at the filter housing and at the oil cooler. i then proceed in theory to cut the steel lines into pieces that would enable me to remove them with no pain. i then take the remaining tubing section from the filter housing and the tubing section from oil cooler to a hydraulic repair facility and have a piece of hose of proper length joined to each section. at this point if theory holds i have mostly hose and two short sections of tubing with the necessary connectors in tact. installation of the mostly hose oil cooler lines would be a snap. where does this hairbrained approach fall short? thank you.

Even easier if its a 240D you have, just chop off the hoses and plug the fittings at the oil filter housing and throw away the oil cooler. If you have a 300, gota keep the cooler. As far as the metal part of the hoses I would imagine it was put there to avoid chafe. I am sure someone else will answer that. I have two 240Ds that are euro cars and never had oil coolers and if they are not needed in Germany they are not needed in western Washington, one less thing not to screw up. I know of one member here that has driven many miles in Texas with no oil cooler. You didn't mention what car you have. Good Luck

stevo, thank you for the reply. i have two 'oil coolers'. an 83 240d and an 83 300d with turbo. it is the 300d that has the oil leak.

oil cooler lines

Sounds like a great idea on oil cooler line. Just get rid of it--less is best. is it really feasible? will the car run just as well without it? No problems further down the line?

Well all I know is when I first got my "80" 240D parts car it did not have an oil cooler so I inquired about it in a couple of NGs in fact if you do a search in this forum you will find the discussion. I found out that euro 240Ds did not have oil coolers regardless of the accessaries, AC, manual or auto trans. The radiator seems to be no bigger. Anyway my newly acquired "85" euro 240D has no oil cooler either. It would be interesting to know if they were exported to middle eastern countries (hot places) w/o oil coolers.
