Well, last night I was rear-ended in my 1983 240D.
Long story short, this humongous dodge truck (at least it was a diesel) creamed into the back of my car while going slow past another crash scene. (if you want the entire story which IS pretty interesting...if you like Starsky and Hutch...email me.)

Almost ripped the entire bumper off, indented the license plate area, pushed the truck up and back, pushed in the pass side fender a little...enough that I don't think it will be able to be pulled out nicely

, and broke the pass rear taillight.
And to top it off, his block heater plug was hanging out and scratched the top of the trunk lid.

Man, I was PO'd. Now I am just sad. BUT, I am very thankful that that was all the damage...it could have been much worse.
My back is pretty sore (I can barely turn side to side) but that may just be because I am back to work after 1 week vacation and not used to sitting all day.

The bumpers on these things are REAL bumpers! Not the fiberglass crap that is attached to the body so that the entire back end cracks apart.

Well, we will see how good my State Farm insurance is now.

you have 'no fault' insurance in Michigan? at least here in CT if you get rear ended 99pct of the time the other guy's insurance pays.. if they have insurance that is...

I have "broad collision" so that when the accident is not my fault, the deductible is waived. I am not sure if it will be my insurance or his that pays for the repairs, but all I know is there is no money leaving MY pocket!

I hope my insurance doesn't go up because of this.

Usually no fault only covers medical charges. If you have collision coverage your ins company should pay for the repairs and then go after the person who hit you.

This should not make your ins increase since the accident was not your fault.

it shud not be that you have to depend on the other person's ins. co. to manage your claim. had this happen once to me when CT had 'no fault' insurance and it took me suing the other guy's ins. co. in small claims court to get any reaction out of them. on the other hand once they got served they paid up quick! i certainly changed my insurance carrier immy after that because they were no help at all.

sorry to to hear of the accident. You say your back is sore I hope you get to feeling better. Can your 83 be repaired or is it a 'mess'? Can it be repaired? Will you repair it? Most important is that you get healthy and feeling better.

Hate to offer this but they will probably total the car(because of it's age) offer you a cash setlement and then you will have to buy the car back from them and have it repaired.sure would not sign anything till your whip lash is confirmed.......

I wish you would remove that large 190D picture. I realize it is beautiful but I'm tired of paging thru it so often and it must be wasting a lot of server space being stored multiple times.

PS, I had 3 190Ds. They were my daily driver for about 10 years. Put 180,000 miles on them.

If they make you a "total the car" offer, tell them you will accept it only if you get to keep the car. Usually on a car that old they will let you keep it because the salvage value is low.

If they give you a hard time, start complaining about your back pain.

Actually I like seeing TXBill’s 190Dc picture. I don’t get to see those on the road much anymore. I wonder if the server is really storing it multiple times anyway. I thought on some of his old posts (viewed now) the 190Dc shows up. If so, then it just stores it once would be my guess.

Remove the """ for it to work, didn't want the picture to load. Anyway what I am getting at is the picture is stored one time. No excess server space is used. Of course for those of you with a dialup connection it may slow things down.

I almost got rear ended hard by a big hick "pickem up truck".

I was waiting making a left with my turnsignal on, stopped. I see a big truck in my rearview mirror flying up but not slowing down, as I am sitting there waiting for him to stop.

I hear skidmarks, then determine there is no way for him to stop in time. I put my foot thru the SDL's floorboard and get out of his way just in time, as he just barely missed hitting me, even with the distance I traveled.

His skidmarks are still there today.

The 240D I've seen there is gone, and has been replaced with a nice 450 sedan...

The problem with these pick-ups is that they sit so damn high! Why in the world does any daily driver need that? Are we expecting 26 inches of snow or something? Even if we are, you really shouldn't be out driving in it.

These trucks are a BIG minus when it comes to safety and hazards to other people/families on the road. Their bumpers are basically at eye level depending on the car involved. NOT SAFE. Our cars, as well built as they are, dont have a chance considering the points of impact are so far above (in inches or feet!) what they should be.

I vote to either outlaw these trucks for the exception of industrial purposes (NEEDS ONLY basis instead of WANTS basis!) and/ or convert trucks with bumpers over x number of inches back to a normal height vehicle - safe for the road.
