Squeeeek
Hi,
I've just noticed a squeeking sound that occurs around 1600 rpm - usually not on acceleration, but when there is no load on engine following acceleration. I'm pretty sure it's not the turbo, and doesn't seem to be the brakes either. The sound seems to be coming from the front - could it be the wheel bearings? If so, would it be odd for them to make noise within such a tight RPM range? I'm not even sure this is something serious, but thought I'd throw it out to the more knowledgeable...which seems to be most everyone who posts... Thanks, Joel |
I know that some interior panneling on my car seem only to squeak at a certain rpm, perhaps it your dash? Anyway, if it's only at one rpm speed, then don't worry. The vibrations from your engine at a certian speed approach the resonance frequency of something loose in your engine compartment (like how a bell or a tuning fork works) and excite it. If it doesn't happen always (I mean at any given rpm), then it's problally not serious. Differential equations, my friends...

Check your three rubber mounting points for the air cleaner. One of them may be broken in half.

I squeak to
Any other ideas on squeaks. I think mine is higher than 1600. When it happens its about 5 per second. Maybe more around 3k rpm as well. I think its in the engine, though I can hear it better in the cab with less engine noise. Happens parked or on the road. Always same rpm.
Maybe theres a mouse stuck somewhere in there. I did check this forum http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=23894&highlight=squeak+rpm but no answers yet. |
Ditto on the resonance theory - I have a terrible rattle I hear (seems to rattle at about 10 Hz) that I only hear at 950 +/- rpm. I finally figured out that it is one of my air cleaner mounts - the nut is missing on one of the corners and the rattle of the bolt in the mounting hole is surprisingly loud.

Just an observation. |
When I got the car I found that the air box leaks blow oil onto the egr onto the engine mount, on to the ground. So I took it off, cleaned the egr and everywhere else I saw oil. The mounts looked good and I even putt a little silicone on the washers of the screws yesterday to keep the oil in the air box. (clean the oil out once a week is a new ritual of mine instead off the ground)
Still squeaks. Maybe I'll Take the box off rev it ,and see if it still squeaks. I do like the violin. |
If the squeak goes away with higher revs, you might check your belts. Mine did that and just needed a bit of tightening.

I had the same squeak/shrieking noise on my '85 300D. Do a search on all my posts. I had the shrieking noise right after the trans shifted and load was off the engine. After posting and reading everything I could, I assumed this must be coming from the ARV (air recirculation valve on the turbo), or the EGR valve. By "accident" a 2.5MM BB (bought at the sports store) fell into the vacuum line to the EGR and the ARV, and wouldn't you know, the noise was gone. I hope this helps.
