Angry Coolant drips? Upper Radiator hose?

No no no...

I don't believe this. Yesterday I replaced my thermostat to fix a weird hot running problem. Fixed that. While doing that I just had to take the upper radiator hose off from the radiator.

I also noticed that the hose had been sealed to the radiator with some red stuff...
I guess I broke that 'sealing' stuff.

I don't believe it should be there.. could it be because the upper radiator nipple had cracked before and this was the previous owner's temporary solution?

I noticed coolant on the ground today... slowly dripping from around the upper radiator hose...

I tightened the hose clamp down but didn't seem to help much but if I loosen it it did worsen the drip.

I've had enough of Anti-freeze on me from yesterday so I think I'm just gonna take this to my mechanic besides school already started so I don't really have the time...

big bummer..

but do you guys think it's the infamous plastic radiator intake that broke or is it just the hose getting really old? When I was putting everything back together I didn't notice anything wrong with the intake. It is the original radiator though (I think) because it still has the MB star on it unless the car was dealer maintained..

Thanks...

I can't believe my luck especially when I try to fix things myself...

Ya bummer, I have been checking into the radiator thing and from what I have found, you can patch those broken outlets, sorta, or I have the address of some outfit that is spoz to be able to fix them but what it has shaken down to is ' get a new radiator' even the radiator shops that I have talked to do not recommend flushing them out. The last place admitted that flushing would most likely cause more problems than it would cure. I am just going to get a new one and be done with it for 20 or so more years. Just bite right down on that bullet : or not
at least its an easy job to do and wont take you much time at all

Holson:

Make sure the hose is in good condition -- if it is cracked at all or swollen behind the clamp, you will have trouble getting it to seal. It is also more likely to fail.

Also, check to make sure there isn't any crud built up on the hose nipple. If there is any, carefully scrap it off. Clean off all the red stuff, too, since chunks of crud under the hose cause it to seep. Deposits from hard water are porous, and coolant will seep. I always scrape all the crud off aluminum parts, especially, as the hoses will always weep if I don't.

Have a care when you tighten this hose, the plastic is brittle. Check the hose nipple for signs of degredation -- if it is pitted, has chips in it, or you can scrape off powdery stuff, you need to consider a new rad. Costs a bunch, but cheaper than a tow and emergency repair when the bloody thing lets go on the highway.

sounds like a hose or clamp. Mine is leaking too, but slowly. last time I tightened the clamp and it worked. anyway, I think its time for new hoses...

took it to my mechanic.. he looked at it and told me to try a new clamp first so he gave me one to fix on. I fixed it on but now the pressure had been relieved so obviously no leaks.. but I'll drive again and see how it goes... when it leaked I could smell anti-freeze!!

the clamp was pretty loose when I took it out and it's almost bent out of shape so I guess it is pretty old.. I just couldn't think how a clamp could go bad..

*crossing my fingers.. hoping I don't have to change the hose*

I know it's not a big deal but I have school to worry about now.. (summer's over) and I kinda hate anti-freeze all over me hehehe...

*** UPDATE! This guy is good! He saved me some money not to replace the hose ... well he'd tell me to fix it myself anyway.. but still***

The clamp fixed it, now the hose is dry as ever!

Nothing feels better than knowing that the 20yr old beast is back on the road!
