Two months with a Peugeot diesel, and a sticker update.....

Greetings,
I've been absent from the message board for a while because I have been on various vacations and time spent away from home, work, and school. I probably should have told you all that I was going to leave because I'm sure a few of you were left wondering about what happened to our sticker project. Well, obviously I'm back, and I've found a printer right near my school who can do it at what seems like a pretty reasonable price. There seem to be a lot of new members who might not know about the sticker thing. I have attached an image of the sticker design that we decided on for our forum sticker. If anyone would like one, please e-mail me personally at ajh268@nyu.edu and let me know how many you'd like. They shouldn't be more than $2 or so each (probably less depending on the quantity I send to print). If you have any questions, please look up the past threads using the search function. Using the word "sticker" or "stickers" should result in the proper threads.

I spent the past month and a half in France in the Loire valley with one of my friends and a Peugeot 406 turbo diesel. Even though it only had a 2 litre engine, the thing could really move, and I was really impressed with how well it was made and how well it handled. Apparently, Peugeot no longer makes crap. The car also got 1200 kilometers per tank which I thought was really really astonishing. If they brought that Peugeot diesel, along with the Mercedes A-class and E-class diesels to the US, I'd be a much happier person.

Alex

Dieselhead:

Peugot has made diesels for a very long time. The only real problem with their cars here was lack of knowledgeable mechanics and rust -- French steel isn't much better than German steel when you douse it with road salt.

We have a family friend in Maryland who bought only diesel Peugots as long as they were available, usually put 300,000 miles on them before trading them in.

I found two (a diesel 504 and a 604) in the junkyard here, both rusted to death but seem to have been running, no major oil leaks, etc. The 604 looks like it was a very nice car, still had a decent interior, but there were serious holes in the fenders and floors. Not bad, since it was at least 20 when it died!

I love the sticker!

Peter

I forgot to mention that the sticker design is courtesy of Michael Kinsley (who is also a member of the forum)

French cars rust? I think melt is a better description. Having had two 504s and a 505 Turbodiesel (not a bad car but nowhere near as quiet as a similar era MBZ) in my family I can tell you with some experience that French steel is much worse than German steel. I don't know if it's true but I was told once that most French cars are actually made with Russian sourced steel. I'll stick with my Benz thank you.

My Peugeot's didn't rust

But then nothing rusts here, and it doesn't get cold enough to anoy a diesel.

I did buy a 504 that spent time in Buffalo. It didn't have any rust but it did have lots of rusted bolts, which leads me to a question: why don't they use stainless steel bolts?

Dieselhead: Do you know if that 406 diesel had direct injection?

Jim,
I'm not quite sure, but I can look it up for you. I'll post whatever I find out.

Finally, the stickers are going to the printers. I will be dropping off the graphics file tomorrow afternoon and they should be ready in two or so weeks. I'll get back to all of you about the pricing. It shouldn't be too much.

HAHAHAhahahahahahaaaaahahahaaaaa

That's what you'd believe if you read European Car Magazines too much... pop in to my independant garage in England sometime, that'll change your mind

That said, the diesels aren't BAD, but nowhere near as good as modern VW (Pump Duse) or Merc CDi units, likewise yes the handling is surprisingly good isn't it? - shame about all the rest of the car.
