info request: 1968 200
Hi,
I have started talking to a guy in my area regarding a 1968 200 he has for sale. I am unsure if it is a gas or diesel, and have not seen it yet, I have just emailed back and forth once. I am kind of excited to see it either way, as it runs well and supposedly has very good body and perfect interor. However, I am not too well versed in the older models. Sme places I have looked appear to point to a w110 fin body (gas) 200 model from 68 (there is a 200D that apparently only went to 67). Other places I have seen a w115 200/8 (what does the /8 mean anyway, I have seen this designation for a few cars), which was a car that started production in 68, according to what I have seen, but the page I use as referewnce doesnt have a list of production years for the US version w115 200/8 diesel So, more or less, whether this car is good or not, Id like to know a timeline of the w110 and w114/5 cars and their models, if someone could enlighten me. In the end all, Id like one of these as a classic to mess around with, so I need to start getting well versed in these cars. Thanks very much, JMH

There is a 68 200D/8. 8 stands for 1968, I have one. About the only difference between 190D and 200D was the 200D engine had 5 main bearings instead of the 3 main bearings in the 190D. Engine size was the same and most parts are interchangable.

Thanks for the info,
so then there is not only a w115 200, but also a w115 190? My website sources must be way off then, I see that there is a w110 190 Dc and a w110 200D, both with 621.xxx engines, but I only see a w115 200D/8, no 190s, the others are all 220s or 240s all with 615/616 engines. Can you tell me a good source where I can get acquainted with all the various MB models from various years? Thanks JMH

Checj out Hacks Mercedes, they have a gallery with all the models, etc... Also, Mercedes Benz NA has a really nice calendar for the year 2001 with a reference chart.

I had the web address of a neat site with all the US MB models with pictures and info but I lost the address and name in a computer crash.
Maybe someone else here has the web address. I will check my older 190, 190D, 200D for the body numbers tomorrow. I think the 115 were the first non fin models which started in 1968 as 220 and 220D. P E H |

thanks for all the info... I found out for certain that the car is a 200 gasoline with twin throat carbs. Kind of a bummer, except that its a fin body, and has a stick. The only other non 123 older diesel Ive found in NJ, DE, PA, MD, VA is a 76 240D auto in NJ that isnt as nice...
If anyone has any leads on a w115 or fin body diesel(preferably stick) Please let me know... Thanks JMH
