declaring victory and a question
was able to remove and replace the engine oil cooler lines on the 83 300d turbo. that is the victory. now the question. i then noticed that both transmission cooler lines are just there moving as the engine thumps. i can see the two clips on each line hanging unattached. where are these clips attached to something secure? the underside of the car is covered with engine oil and i do not have a clue. thank you.

Janko,
I replaced my trans cooler lines with wire wrapped ones and don't recall any fasteners other than where they connect at the ends. Nic '85 300CD |

There are some small brackets that are attached via the oil pan bolts. There are also some spacers that go between the clamp and the oil pan.
Good luck, |

Be very careful the lines are not chaffing on anything. The air cleaner bracket on my 83 300D was broken (common problem) and it rubbed a hole in the oil line. Unfortunately for me this happened when my wife was driving the car on a road trip and by the time she noticed something was wrong the lack of oil had already ruined the engine. It still would run but knocked really bad. Luckily I found a used engine with 60K on it and replaced it. A $3000. lesson learned.
