AC compressor cost
It appears that my compressor's seals have gone out. I have lost all of my freon charge. The back side of the compressor is covered with an oily residue. My understanding is that the compressor is a R4. I am debating on putting in a new compressor or a rebuilt one. The new one's cost about $300. , rebuilt about $100. I am not planning on keeping the car very long, maybe another 6 mos to a year. The transmission is beginning to leak a little. The seals were replace front and back about a year ago., cost $950., and I don't want to spend more money on it.
I would appreciate your thoughts on the subject. 85 300D.

Are you sure it is the compressor seals... or maybe it is just the seal in the fitting which attaches to the compressor... that would sure be easy and cheap to fix compared to the other...

If it is body seals:
McParts Store rebuilds are usually from one of the four companies that make up one corporation(can't remember it's name, sorry). Murray and Four Seasons(seizens ) are the two dominant rebuilders in that group of four and they have a really poor reputation on their rebuilds. That would be the $100 rebuild. Apco has a good rep. on their remanufactured R4. This would be the $150-225 rebuid. Phil at PartsShop would have the best handle on new or quality rebuild. I replaced body seals and shaft seals on a couple of my R4s and I definitely recommend the NEW compressor only. The price differential favors it over rebuilt. The R4 is truly "cheaper" to buy new, because it's cost is low relative to all other AC compressors.

If you plan to sell the car soon, buy a rebuild and sell it fast.
If you plan to keep the car for many years, spend the money on a NEW compressor. There are waaaaay too many sob stories about rebuilds that simply don't last. Refrigerant is not cheap nowadays (unless you're using that R134a crap). Note: Make sure you use the proper oil or you'll be repeating this project! Regards, |
