If it's not one thing it's the other

Today for the first time after I started my car the starter did not immideately dis-enguage, and keeps griding for a few seconds. I started the car about 7 times today and it did it all 7 times. Is it time for a new starter? How tough is it to put in a starter on a 603? Thanks..

It's not the starter itself, its the solonoid. If you can just replace that it would be a bunch cheeper.

Believe it or not, this did happen to me. I knew it was going like yours and it got worse over a matter of days literally. So- I just scheduled it for a $400+- doctor visit and all is well. That's my approach to some of these problems although, the starter is not supposed to be all that difficult when I last did a search on it. Could be a cracked tooth as well.

Is there a possibility of messing up my flywheel? I could care less about screwing up the starter right now.

TANK 10-15-2002 11:22 AM

She's decided she's not going to spend another dollar on the car though and just see

I guess it's all a matter of perspective TX BIll. I was afraid of getting stuck somewhere or making a small problem worse. I don't blame your sister for how she feels about it though. BTW, Turbodiesel, why are you saying if it's not one thing it's another? Just a couple of posts ago, I recall you being very happy with the reliability of you car?

Nate Stanley 10-15-2002 11:30 AM

I agree with Tank. I had the same problem 2 months ago. There may come a time when the solenoid sticks on and will not disengage. At that point if the engine starts, it will spin the starter way faster than it was designed to go, and you run a risk of ruining a good core for the starter rebuilder, and that will add 100-150 bucks to the cost of the starter.

If you pass this problem to the seller, you will hear from them-

I just bit the bullet and had it done, no regrets. A good shop can swap one out in an hour-total cost to me was $285 for a Bosch reman.

Nate, I wonder if that's what happened to a 94' z28 I owned? One day when I went to start the car, it sounded like the starter never caught and the the car sounded like an air compressor or something. The noise continued for 5 minutes even though the engine never started and smoke began bellowing out of the spaced between the hood and fenders (hood was shut). I ran away from the car because I thought it was going to blow up! Finally, I had to have it towed and a new starter. I always wondered what had happened..

turbodiesel 10-15-2002 11:44 AM

Yes the car is reliable, but it's the small things. This week I found out that I need a starter, motor mounts, motor shocks, motor shock mounts, and possibly a drivers side tie rod, and I just had the front-end rebuilt 20K miles ago. I mean the car never left me stranded, but its a bit of a pain in the ass to keep the car the way I like it, mechanically perfect.

TANK 10-15-2002 11:51 AM

I know exactly how you feel!! When you say you had the front end rebuilt, I am assuming you mean bushings and NOT that you are going through new tie rods every 20k...

Nate Stanley 10-15-2002 11:56 AM

Tank,
I had it happen on a Corvair- but then the starters were only 35 bucks, so it doubled the value of the car when I put a new one in.

Mr. Bosch plays for much higher stakes these days.

turbodiesel 10-15-2002 05:55 PM

Yes, I had ball joints, bushings, tie rods, idler arm, etc etc etc. Now I think the drivers side tierod is loose.

TANK 10-15-2002 06:23 PM

The reason I was asking is because I am having mine all replaced this week. I would be willing to bet it's just loose or maybe wasn't put on quite right to begin with. At least I am hoping that is the case for both our sakes. God knows I don't want to be doing this again in 20k!Yuk!

Hey, the starter thing happened to my family (my parents and myself) during our trip through Easter Europe in the '70s. The car would not start at the Soviet-Romunian border. had to have custom officers help us push (Luckily, the car had a manual tranny). Somewhere at the beach campsite in Bulgaria (4 days later) my Dad decided to open up the starter. It was hilarous to look at his face when all kinds of loose parts fell out into his palm after he took off the cover. For the next 3 weeks (Bulgaria, Romunia, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia) we were starting the car "manually"... :D :p

Starter finally died today, it just freespins. That goodness it was in my driveway. Any helpful advise on starter R&R?
