a/c compressor belt change- help needed
(this was a post about the PS pump, but after inspection, its the A/C compressor ! !)
well, while going to change my oil tonight, i get under the car and see the a/c belt is shredded ! ! how hard is it and how long does it take to replace this belt ? any special tools required ? btw, its an 83' 300 CD thanks in advance !!! |
Need to take off the ps belt to get to the a/c belt. As for taking off the a/c belt, there should be a tenioner located somewhere on the engine, need to locate a bolt on this to get the belt off. At least that's how it is on my 1979 300CD, you have a different compressor so it might be different. This should take no longer than 10-15 minutes.

I need to change mine
85 CD, I noticed my compressor belt had a parallel chunk about two inches long and just a 1/4 wide, missing leaving about a half a belt in thickness for that stretch. The belt looks new so I am a little worried it is rubbing??? It only looks like it is in one section of the belt.
My A/C worked last Sept/OCt when I bought the car, but now it does not blow cold when the outside temp is about like 70 or so.... I ordered the part... has anyone done this lately. I am out of town now, so don't have access to my Haynes manual, but after reading some posts, it looks like I have to loosen the tensioner pulley to reduce tension on the belt, then take off the PS belt, to get to the compressor belt. Any tips? |
If it has the R4 like my 300d, you just take tension off the belt and then pull it out.
Looking from the front of the car, the tensioner is on the top right of both the compressor and the PS pump. They pivot on the top left bolt (looking from the front again). Basically loosen the bolts and then loosen the nut on the tensioner and then with some grunting and pulling, the belts come off. |

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=155908&highlight=alternator+bolts+dave Read the whole post, I cover the compressor further down the post. Make sure you completely loosen the adjusting bolt to move the compressor over so you can remove the belt. I use a crow bar to move it. Consider replacing all the belts while you are there. Dave |
wow
wow,
thanks. I like your response with the pictorial. The other belts look less than a year old, so I am going to just change the compressor belt for now. I looks like I have to take off the PS belt first, than replace the compressor belt, and put the PS belt back on. Quote:

and since the alternator belts have to have both the PS belts AND the A/C belts off to change, be SURE they are in tip top shape before you "just" change the a/c belt. if they are even a slight bit polished, they will slip resulting in your car not charging. be sure, get a fresh matched pair of alt belts and change them.

thanks
thanks, I will triple checkm but they all look new including the compressor belt.
It just has that notch cut out that worries me. Any ideas what happened there....did my compressor seize and therefore my A/C stopped working? Quote:
