The 240 a cool car?.......NOT!
My middle school son needed to be picked up at school yesterday. Sure I'll be glad to pick you up I say. He looks up at me with a shy, respectful look and says; "um, Dad could you drive Mom's car?"
And there you have it. |

Ah, but what the 240D lacks in Coolness, it makes up for in Character. This weekend I finally get my 240 from Tx, and I consider it a step up from my 1/2 bondo, falling apart Bronco II.

Any Mercedes diesel is cool in my book, but a W123 is the ultimate in coolness.

So what does he want to drive when he's 16? A Honda with multi-color racing stickers, a big wing on the back, neon underneath, oversized wheels/tires bulging out of its little fenders, and a 10" tailpipe sticking out the back, sounding like dying chainsaw? hahahaha....Would that be "cool"?
Kids....gotta' love 'em, but you don't gotta' love their lack of taste! Hopefully he'll gain more appreciation for beautiful engineering when he gets older. Mike

I hate those customized Honda's, I try and race them, but they tend to always beat me. I look at it this way, my car has been around for 24 years, and it is still on the road, and most likely it will still be on the road in another 5-10 years, the Honda will most likely be not, most likely in the wrecking yard because of a botched customizing job or being wrapped around a telephone pole. Customizing Honda's is a big hit in the pocket book, and a customized car will be worth a lot less money in a few years than a stock Honda, so I don't have anything against Honda, just the customized ones.

Customized or not, those imports will be recycled into beverage cans LONG before your MB is even starting to show its age!

I also forgot to mention that I feel safer in a Mercedes new or old than in a new Honda. I figure the fact that the Mercedes is a little larger, and has a little more mass makes it safer. When I was 16 and customizing Honda's started to become popular and I wanted one. Now I am older I am glad that I was smart and stuck with larger vehicles and have moved into even safer Mercedes.

My oldest boy (13) is the same way. He would rather ride to school in the CRV instead of the 300TD. I tell him he should be glad he is not riding the bus.

I don't have an issue with the youngsters taste in cars, whatever he likes is his own taste. I would be worried that he is too hung up on peer pressure and how he is seen socially. This is a dangerous and scary pattern. I would feel better if he put little or no importance in such a thing, this would indicate his not being a follower, socially speaking. A youngster that is a follower is all but doomed in the midst of todays enormous peer pressures among teens.
I would not point out such a thing were it not that if I could go back about 10 or 12 years I wish someone would have pointed out this pattern to me. Best of luck, |

Point taken Larry.
But I don't think that there are any serious character issues involved here. I think that he is going through the "my parents are squair" rite of passage that I certainly went through. He was just hoping for the more generic look of my wifes non-customized Accord over the more "dorky" 20 year old 240. |

You can't predict kids preferences though...
Before my youngest turned 16 I bought him an Accord hatchback. I told him we could trick it up any way he wanted it done, including custom paint and wheels. He didn't want that. His mother didn't like the car either, thinking it was too "old". His vehicle of choice, a Nissan King Cab pickup, completely stock! So that's what I bought him. Funny thing though, when these little girls come to the house, the car they immediately are drawn to is the 300E. I don't understand; there's a 65 Falcon Futura hardtop parked right next to it!!

Can I suggest an alternative interpretation. The kid is modest, and embarassed by the image of wealth and status that the 240d projects.
