Has anyone put a 300 turbo engine into a 240D? The 300 is an automatic and the 240 is a stick. The 300 is starting to rust and th 240 is in good shape. I know it is possible but I would like to know what is involved and any special problems. Ive swapped engines before (including putting a 220d into a International Scout) Id like it to be more or less factory. Any thoughts at all would be greatly appreciated. PS I have an awesome set of tools

The swap is relatively easy as the turbo engine will fit right in.

Here's what you'd need if you wanted to have a manual turbo setup:

1. Manual 300D or 300d flywheel.
2. If the 240 clutch parts are in good condition use them.
3. The 240D driveshaft would have to be lengthened, rewelded and balanced, about $125.00.
4. The three shift links from under the car would have to be shortened exactly four (4) inches. They must be marked, cut and clamped in alignment while rewelding so they work right.
5. If you have the single bolt transmission mount, it will just bolt up four inches further back. The holes are already in the frame and the original clip nuts can be moved back to the new places.
6. Of course, you'll need to replace the 240D exhaust setup with the turbo one, but that'll take about ten minutes to put in place.
7. You'll need a pilot bearing to press into the rear of the crank.
8. Get new flywheel bolts when installing the manual flywheel.
9. I'd advise replacing the throw out bearing, make sure you get the right one for the 240D transmission-there are three different ones as I recall.
10. Install the manual transmission onto the turbo engine before installing as that's a lot easier than getting the two bolt upper bellhousing bolts in with the trans still in the car.

Since you've already the pedals, etc in place your conversion will be a snap. Leave the 240D emblem on the rear so your car is a sleeper. Imagine how many rice rockets won't be able to understand how your 240D moves so well.

You've love the end result!!!!!!! I've done three of them and I had to move the auto pedals and replace with the manual pedals, etc. so I know the job in my sleep. In the next couple of weeks, I'll be putting a 280CE 5 speed in our intercooled turbo diesel and will post pictures and speed specs once it's done.

Forgot to mention that the balance alignment mark on the flywheel and the one on the crank should be aligned when ready to bolt the manual flywheel to the crank.
