Is my turbo telling me something?
I've just recently started hearing a pronounced high pitch whine coming from my turbo charger. Now, I've always been able to hear it a little but never like this.
Just wondering if I am hearing the begining of it's death wail

I'll be surprised if it is the turbo. If it were lack of lubrication it will not run for long. May just be a leak from the bypass or even from one of the vacuum lines around the turbo. Try an experiment - put a bb in the vacuum line going to the bypass and the egr valve and see if the noise continues.

Hey Jim,
Thanks for the feedback. I'll take a close look at the vac lines. A bb huh? I'll try that if I don't find any leaks. Joe

engawork offers good advice, Also check the seals that are on the connecting tube from the oil pan to the turbo. I have only seen one of these things go out in 1000's. Maybe she is just getting happier with older age...

Check to make sure the air inlet pipe is intact and connected. Ditto for the turbo to intake connection.
These turbos are very quiet -- usually can only hear them if something is off or leaking. However, they do scream when the bearings are going sometimes. Peter

Take off the U shaped intake hose to the turbo. Of course do this while the car is turned off. Check for any directional play in the compressor wheel of the turbo and make sure it spins freely.
