Oil Filter Wrench on 1998 E300 Turbo Diesel
I just attempted to do the oil change on my 98 E300 TD with a friend. We got underneath the car are were not able to move the plug. I have read about this elsewhere in this forum, so I was not too intent on getting it off. I went home and purchased the Topsider and am planning on performing the change sometime this weekend. Before I try again, is there a special oil filter wrench I need to purchase to get the oil filter off? I am assuming the filter is towards the back near the firewall. I have a Jetta TDI and I had to purchase a filter wrench from Hazet and the DIY instructions (version 2) mention a Hazet wrench, but the model year of the car is different.
Can someone confirm the location of the filter and if I need a special wrench. If I do need the wrench, please post specific info so I can purchase. Thanks, |

Oil Filter Wrench
On mine its a standard nut or bolt cannot keep those straight. Any tool box will do, the filter fits into a well, drain oil first then pull out filter.
Where did you buy the topsider and how much was it?

I assumed I could a standard wrench, but I thought I would ask before I got into the middle of the job.
I purchased the Topsider from It was close to $58 delivered. Many boat / marine stores carry it. Perhaps there is a store near you. |

Standard wrench, sort of. I don't remember the exact size required, but it's something like 40mm. Pretty unlikely you'll have one of those laying around in your toolbox. The torque required is really low, so you can [insert grimace] just use slip joint pliers. but of course, that would be the back alley way, not the Mercedesshop way...

I used a monkeywrench myself, though if I remember correctly the bolthead did not look all that big 19 or 20 at most.
Any MB fans in the dayton oh area? Would like to get a non-dealer option on maint issues.

The socket for the filter is 36mm, MB part number 606-589-01-09-00 goes for about $12.

36 mm is right, but the mb tool is better. It was $8 at my local dealer. 25nm is the proper torque.
My drain plug was also overtorqued, but once I popped it open, things have been fine since. I've installed a Fumoto drain valve, and taking oil samples for analysis, and oil changes are a snap, and I know that I'm getting it all out.

Thanks to all for the information. I will probably get the proper tool from the dealer.

I just ordered one from the parts department at my local dealer. $17! I was quoted $7 at my dealer up in Ohio, what a rip. Let me know what others are paying!
