W126 83 300SD sidestepping in turns

My 83 300SD seems to switch tracks when the transmission shifts in a turn. Say I start a turn from a stop and the transmission shifts from first to second, the rear end steps out when the tansmission shifts. There's some oversteer but nothing drastic. What should I check? Is this something replacing the rear subframe bushings will fix?

Thanks,
Sixto

Sounds like your tranny is shifting hard and chriping the rear tires a bit when the weight of the car is at a funny proportion in a turn.

I didn't describe it enough. It feels like the body shifts over the wheels or the body shifts a lot more than the wheels. I know what you mean by the tires sliding sideways since it's easy to do that in the SE in a 1-2 shift in a turn. Heck, even going straight.

But it could well be the tires chirping. Thanks.
