Lightbulb suggestion: $2.50 140cc syringe for clutch bleeding

I had to replace a leaky slave cylinder on my 300DT 4-speed this weekend. I ordered this for reverse bleeding; only $2.50 and it worked great. http://www.sciplus.com/singleItem.cfm?terms=7668
One 'shot' put the fluid level back above the minimum mark!

I'm thinking of having a 300 Turbo put in my 1983 240D manual body (engine runs fine, just burns lots of oil. If I'm going to pour money into the engine, I may as well get a 300!) Was your 300td manual already a 300 and you just switched out the auto trans or was it some other conversion? How difficult is it to drop a 300TD into a 240? I know the driveshaft needs to be shortened. Anything else? I am also toying with the idea of removing the 4 speed manual and putting in a 5 speed manual for the 300 turbo. How hard would that be> I should say how hard would that be for a mechanic since I am not a DIYer, just a MB lover.

Thnaks, Tim

Tim - you need to try to hook up with "Ridge". I think he lives out in that area. Personally, I would not want to pay someone to do this conversion. I figure it could get quite expensive even at an independents shop rates.

My project was to replace the faulty automatic transmission in my 300DT with a 4-speed gearbox from a 240D parts car. I decided to go forward with the swap because my car looks pretty good, the engine is strong, and there weren't too many other issues that a parts car wouldn't provide for.
The task required swaping flywheels, installing clutch/hydraulics/pedal cluster, paying a driveshaft shop to shorten the front half of the driveshaft (as well as replace ujoint). I don't think I would have gone thru with this if I had to pay someone else.
Replacing the 4 banger with a turbo charged 5 cylinder AND modifying the driveshaft AND finding a 5 speed will be even more costly. Thus I agree that if you want a 5 cylinder turbo 5-speed, you may at least want to start with a 300D, perhaps you can find one in good shape with a trashed automatic tranny.

Great idea.....That syringe looks to be the same thing we used when we had lots of critters here. Thanks for the tip (no pun intended) I will check out in the barn we used mostly the smaller size but the locel feed store would be a place to pick them up.

Exclamation Or!

Used in reverse it makes a pretty good field expedient mity vac. Attach it to the vacuum apparatus under test and pull the plunger back, by holding your finger on the plunger and barrel you will be able to tell if its holding vacuum or leaking. Adding a gage into the circuit will make it even easier.
