Finally dawned on me...

I've been getting an irregular idle here and there when I put the car in park with no engine load (no AC, lights off, etc). It doesn't happen all the time, but it's often enough that it's troublesome to me. I know I'm a hypochondriac with this car... but the car also doesn't idle at 1000 RPM upon cold start up (this morning was 4C) anymore. This is the second fall/winter with this car for me, and last winter it did the fast idle then, and no irregular idle then. These two seem linked.

I know my idle is controlled by vacuum. Which a problem with the idle could mean a leak somewhere else, right? It's pretty hard to even see the unit since it's under the intake manifold.

Should I just put up with this stuff and shut up? Or should I work to solve this 'problem?'

I'm with you. The irregular stuff bugs me and I'm still searching for perfection. Dream land for sure with me, but still looking.

Good luck. Wish I knew 190D's but am struggling with the 300's.

Don

that's funny, i was gonna post a question today titled, "For the Truly Anal."

are you ready for this: my clock hands don't "line up" properly, i.e. when it's 12:00 the big hand is on the 12, but the little hand reads like it's 12:20 or so.

perhaps i should seek help...

Talking

I guess it depends on how anal you are, and more importantly how much time you have. I'm nutty about things being clean and how my cars run. I've had my head stuck in engine bays searching for vacuum leaks to solve idle problems or hissing sounds that drive me nuts. But to me, once I found and replaced the vacuum line ( I just did one which was way down there and little-you could barely see it) it felt oh so good.

Well she idled at 1000 rpm this morning @ 2C. So I guess this is a good sign. But still doesn't mean it is going to work all the time. I will see how it goes when it gets much colder here.

i doubt it... little hand on 20... little hand indicates hour, so if at 12 the big hand indicates 12 and the little hand indicates 20, the time would indicate 4:00, not 12:20. He got his hands switches around.

not sure how much clearer i could've been the first time around:

"i.e. when it's 12:00 the big hand is on the 12, but the little hand reads like it's 12:20 or so. "

a) it's 12:00
b) big hand should be on 12, little hand should be on 12
c) however, my big hand is on 12, and the little hand READS like it's 12:20.

you get it? look at your clocks right now. if it's 4:20, or 4:30, or 4:40, is your little hand still resting directly on the 4?

obviously you guys haven't learned to tell time yet.

LOL... I see. You mean the little hand is about a third of the way between the 12 and the 1. That makes it a little less strange. When you said it looks like it's 12:20, we thought you inverted the hands, and meant that be big hand was pointing to 4.
